Our Picks for 7/14 – 7/22: Steve Miller Band, Tour Des Chutes, Halestorm and more!

The Poison Control Center
thursday 15
There's a hell of a lot going on Thursday night (White Buffalo at the Silver Moon and The Aggrolites at the Domino Room, just to name a few), but there's another show worth checking out down on the south end of town and it involves Poison Control Center, an Iowa-based power-pop act. They're instantly quirky with great Built to Spill-like hooks and a crazy live show. 8pm. Mountain's Edge Bar, 61131 S. Hwy 97.

Hassling Oregon's Home Brewers

This probably is a historic first: This week's edition of THE BOOT was inspired by a bit of imbecility involving Oregon's liquor laws, but we're not giving it to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

This probably is a historic first: This week's edition of THE BOOT was inspired by a bit of imbecility involving Oregon's liquor laws, but we're not giving it to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
The OLCC, it seems, is just an innocent pawn in this story, which involves the regulation of home brewers. Oregon's liquor control law – enacted shortly after the end of Prohibition some 70 years ago – forbids anyone not licensed by the OLCC to make alcoholic beverages but carves out an exception for “the making or keeping of naturally fermented wines and fruit juices or beer in the home, for home consumption and not for sale.”

Put a Cap on It: BP's heroic efforts, Steinbrenner vs. Martin, the Barefoot Bandit and more!

The author is investigating nearly 30 percent unemployment among American students (3xs the national unemployment rate yet hardly half of Bend's) by sitting along Drake Park and donning mirrored sunglasses, not perving on the bikini-clad floaters mind you, but investigating.
Ponder This At The Pump
“I couldn't be prouder of the team that put on the sealing cap. That really went extremely well,” lauded BP Senior Vice President Kent Wells upon attaching a cap that “could seal” the leaking well that has spewed over 4,000,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico since BP's Deepwater Horizon platform exploded on April 20th. Tar-balls are now being found in the fragile Lake Pontchartrain ecosystem yet no one from BP has been arrested. Congrats! Even better news: BP predicts (if the well is capped, which we've heard before) that up to 3.36 million barrels could be collected over the next three weeks. Huh? Wait! Wasn't that well spewing “only 20,000” barrels a day (versus the original ruse of “only 5,000” – – which scientists now estimate at really 35,000-60,000 per day)? For the sake of humanity, the environment and the huge legal battle to come, get your numbers straight.

Runnin' Cuffed

So you'd think if someone is arrested on suspicion of DUII and subsequently handcuffed and placed in the back of a law enforcement vehicle, that he or she could safely say their night was over, right?

So you'd think if someone is arrested on suspicion of DUII and subsequently handcuffed and placed in the back of a law enforcement vehicle, that he or she could safely say their night was over, right? But wait! You've yet to meet Carla Charley, the woman who, although handcuffed, escaped from the back of a BLM vehicle after being arrested in Maupin and, at the time of this writing, is still on the loose. Oregon State Police are still trying to figure out how she got out, and so are we, but think David Blaine might want to study this chick's methods.

A Productive Partnership: LandWatch's track record shows it's here to stay

Last week, the Source Weekly published an article, “Green Machine,” that asked if Central Oregon had the capacity to support two land use advocacy organizations. As Executive Director of one of those organizations – Central Oregon LandWatch – I'm writing to express confidence that it does.
As I told the article's author, Anne Aurand, and as LandWatch and 1000 Friends of Oregon have discussed with each other, our real challenge is how to articulate our unique but overlapping messages and missions to the larger community and help people understand the benefits of each.

LandWatch Has Our Backs

This week's letter comes from Hillary Garrett who piggybacks on last week's feature story and points out some of the additional accomplishments that Central Oregon LandWatch has wracked up over the years. Thanks for the letter, Hillary. As this week's winner you're entitled to a bag of gourmet coffee courtesy of Strictly Organic roasters. Stop by our office, 704 NW Georgia, to collect your grounds.

Thank you for featuring last week's piece, “The Green Machine,” and for bringing attention to the tremendous work of Central Oregon LandWatch.
Having been around for a long time, 1000 Friends of Oregon has achieved numerous accomplishments and has strong name recognition around the state. But in Central Oregon LandWatch, the region has something unique: a locally bred, rural-based, land-use advocacy group that has proven successful at both the state and local levels.

Geese Are An Attraction

Let's see. Bend is a tourist destination. So… Kill the geese.

Let's see. Bend is a tourist destination. So… Kill the geese. How about T-shirts with this reassuring message front and back? No poop danger here. Oh, except dog poop. And those deer! And cougars! And juniper trees! Nuisances all. Let's just level the place (all those rocks!) and make a nice level golf course.

Geese Are a Gateway Cause

War in Iraq. Massive oil spill. Record high foreclosures and rampant homelessness. Who cares? Probably the same people who care about needlessly slaughtering the geese.

Geese Piece Was Callous

The Source apparently feels that Bend residents are unjustified in voicing their opinions and feelings concerning the 109 Drake Park geese that were rounded up and killed courtesy of the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District.

Personally, I feel that no one has the right to kill another living creature. Those geese were a part of my very soul, and my heart feels both pain and anger for their deaths.

Damien Jurado

I should know after so many years that Damien Jurado doesnโ€™t pen jolly songs.

I should know after so many years that Damien Jurado doesn't pen jolly songs. Sure, some of his best character-driven stories are backed with music we classify as upbeat or poppy, but those tunes you tap your foot to tend to be his most grim and heart busting. And on Saint Bartlett, Jurado's ninth full-length release, a record that sounds unlike anything he's created, Jurado still manages to trick the listener into believing he's writing cheery pop songs.
