Our Picks For 11/07-11/15
The Nature of Words 2012 Literary Festival
wednesday 7-sunday 11
Yes, we picked this event last week, but because itโs five days long and cool we reckoned it deserved another nod. Take in author readings, book signings, workshops, lectures and presentationsโyouโll find a complete schedule of events on thenatureofwords.org/Festival. If you can get your mitts on last weekโs Source, check out our Culture section where we picked the best of the best NOW events to help guide you through five days of literary adventure. The events kick off with the Rising Star creative writing awards ceremony (free!) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the COCC Library. COCC and various locations across town. Ticket info at thenatureofwords.org.
Have A Seat: Armchair Returns To Tin Pan Theater
Conceptually it might sound like a bore: eight people stand on a stage and each tell an unrehearsed story without the use of props.
But add to this that the theme of all the stories will be โUp All Night,โ and that this event will be held in the intimate Tin Pan Theater and it all starts to sound a little voyeuristic and, therefore, interesting.
Yes, this sort of live storytelling template where brave souls tell stories of their lives has proven popular around the nation, including in Portland where itโs called Back Fence PDX, and New York City where itโs called The Moth.
SIGNS SHOULD NOTE AFFILIATIONS
Has anyone else noticed that the jumbo political signs popping up around Central Oregon for Republican candidates (Tim Knopp, Jason Conger, Gene Whisnant, etc.) fail to mention their political affiliation? I would be naive to assume they are so ashamed of what the Republican Party has become that they want to distance themselves from it.
GET RID OF NOISE ORDINANCE
The issue of enforcement of local noise ordinance won’t go away, at least until we come up with a solution that makes more sense. Why not lessen the standards for local musicians instead? This is the issue as I see it. On one hand, we have a group of entertainers whose prosperity and success is vital to the life of our city. On the other hand, we have residents who have the right to live the quiet life that makes them happy. Or do they?
HORTON HEARS A “WHA-A-A?!”
There’s no question that our parks are exceptional and a source of pride for Central Oregonians, but I suggest Mr. Horton and members of the BPRD board step outside their comfy digs in Dreamland for a stroll through our local economic zone.
They’ll meet the unemployed, the barely employed, and the employed at a fraction of the salary they once earned and are qualified for. Certainly they won’t be able to avoid bumping into some of our recent homeless and suddenly impoverished, as well as many seniors barely surviving on Social Security while paying property taxes not based on the shrinking value of their homes.
VOTE NO ON PARKS BOND
Bend Parks & Rec Bond 9-86 proposes many fine recreational opportunities that are โnice-to-haveโ but in this economy, and with critical water, sewerage and school obligations, not essential for Bend. I recommend that Bend citizens vote against the bill. Alternatively, BPRD should then reprioritize, redefine some projects and then resubmit the bond as a set of smaller proposals that will allow voters a fair evaluation of each project.
For example, the proposed purchase of three properties in the North Deschutes Canyon, adjacent to BPRD- owned Gopher Gulch, includes the 28-acre โJeffers property.โ For approximately $3.5 million, BPRD plans to purchase this charming house and barn on acreage with a great view of the canyon. Wouldnโt it be cheaper to simply purchase a right of way in which to cross the river and extend the DR trail?
VOTE NO ON BALLOT MEASURES 82 & 83
Tisโ the season for nastiness. There is no โpoliteโ in politics. Why does politics cancel civility? It looks like the white man is still trying to lie to the Native American Indians. Oregon reached an agreement some years back that each tribe could have a casino on their land to help with the financial stability of their communities and in return they donated/paid a sum of money to help other Oregon needs. This provided jobs on the reservation and for the local economy. AND โThere was peace in the valley.โ
SAVE TUMALO FALLS AND YOUR MONEY
Are you willing to see Tumalo Falls unnecessarily depleted?ย Are you willing to allow our pristine watershedโthe source of Bendโs drinking water and the lifeblood of our fish & wildlifeโto be permanently and irreversibly harmed? Do you want higher than necessary water rates?ย If not, vote for Sally Russell, Doug Knight, Barb Campbell and Jim Clinton for Bend City Council. This will ensure a majority on the council who will support an economically smart water system as well as an environmentally beneficial one.
GERI HAUSER ASKS FOR YOUR VOTE FOR STATE SENATE
My name is Geri Hauser and I am running for State Senate.ย I am not a career politician or a lobbyist. Iโm a wife, step-mother and grandmother who cares about our community. We need regular people like myself fighting for progressive values in Salem.
Our elected officials will be working on three critical issues in the next session: jobs, education and health care. If I win, we will move forward in these important areas. If my opponent wins, heโll lead us backwards and further increase the partisan gridlock in Salem.
