Blonde Redhead: Penny Sparkle

It's hard to be critical of Blonde Redhead. The longtime New York trio always has gorgeous vocals, unique instrumentation and an otherworldly sound. Even at their weakest, this is a band that never lacks taste.

That's my long disclaimer for this: I am disappointed by Penny Sparkle. I'm not mad at it. It doesn't make me want to puke. It's just that it seems to lack the depth and range of emotion of 23 and Misery is a Butterfly – and I think Blonde Redhead fans need that diversity. Because when Kazu Makino, the band's singer, is sad, she's suicidal. And when the band picks her up off the ground and speeds things up, she's still no cheerleader.

Who Let The Hot Out? Lopez on marriage, Obama hates kids and more

It's officially fall, as of last week. It's the time of year when the leaves change color, the days get cooler and football dominates most casual conversation. Well, except for this year, that is.

The Heat of Autumn
It's officially fall, as of last week. It's the time of year when the leaves change color, the days get cooler and football dominates most casual conversation. Well, except for this year, that is. Well, people are still talking about football, but the weather on the West Coast has been anything like fall like. Temperatures have been weirdly warm here in Central Oregon, staying in the low 80s all week, but down in Los Angeles it got straight up scary hot… as in the hottest day ever.

Drag Show Is Demeaning

his October, Human Dignity Coalition of Bend will present their 9th annual Drag Show fundraiser.

This October, Human Dignity Coalition of Bend will present their 9th annual Drag Show fundraiser. Shortly after last year's fundraiser, I wrote Jenni Peskin, Director of HDC, arguing that the “drag” theme was inappropriate, and asked that her organization discontinue that theme. Clearly my argument had no effect. What follows is the text of my letter to Ms. Peskin:

Measure 76 will provide key dollars and support for our community resources and special places for everyone. We have a chance to vote yes for Measure 76 this November. It is an important vote, as it is putting money into savings for our parks, for our water, for our kids, and for our natural areas and wildlife – all while creating jobs now.

Chief Paulina Was No Role Model

I enjoyed your column last week in the Source on Newberry National Volcanic Monument. I only took exception on one item and that was your reference to Grand Old Chief Paulina.

OLCC Still Doesn't Get It

The Jason Evers story was interesting, and with all the side drama about identity theft, etc., the spotlight was on Jason and less so on OLCC (Oregon Liquor Control Commission).

The “Jason Evers” story was interesting, and with all the side drama about identity theft, etc., the spotlight was on “Jason” and less so on OLCC (Oregon Liquor Control Commission). I think that, although understandable, the emphasis was misplaced. Here’s why: I was in a local wine shop here in Bend where a wine distributor from Portland was pouring his wines. He related a story that while in Portland he was doing the same thing, pouring tastes of wine, when a customer loudly and obnoxiously began to complain that the wine he was pouring was corked.

Grinderman: Grinderman 2

The thing that gets me every time – be it on a Bad Seeds' album, in his fiction or with Grinderman – is how human Nick Cave is.

The thing that gets me every time – be it on a Bad Seeds' album, in his fiction or with Grinderman – is how human Nick Cave is. He is a flawed, soft-fleshed mortal creature, just like the rest of us. His humanity comes out in the way he sings like he's speaking in tongues, repeating a word or a phrase over and over again until he's wrung all the blood and fluids from it. The way he growls and hums lyrics. And the way he talks of the nightmares in his head: of eating inchworms, of swearing off God, of black unicorns, slave dwarves and Steve McQueen.

ON THE RUN
Editor's Note: This is the first installment in a semi-regular column dedicated to running, including events coverage, trail updates, conditioning and general buzz from around Central Oregon's prolific competitive and casual running scene.

A rare wet mid-September weekend brought two great running events to Central Oregon. The Bigfoot 10K, the elder statesman of foot races in Central Oregon, was held on Sunday. Bigfoot is a true community event put on every year by Central Oregon Running Klub. All the proceeds benefit the Bend LaPine High School Cross Country teams. The slightly downhill course offers up fast times and more than 150 high school runners volunteer to build atmosphere by cheering on participants while making sure they're heading in the right direction.
