A relatively average late winter and early spring, allowed state highway managers to open the scenic McKenzie pass to vehicle traffic Thursday morning. The highway has been closed since mid-November and opens roughly on schedule, but more than a month earlier than its latest opening in 1999 when crews didn’t get the road open until late July.

Route Canal: making a new cycling connection
When I recently blogged about the cyclocross nationals, a reader posted a response adding something to the affect that why haven’t people considered using the roads alongside the various canals as possible bike passageways. That idea drew other positive responses including one from Bend City Councilor Jody Barram praising the idea and also questioning why nobody had done anything about it.

Council Plays Santa Claus with Unexpected Revenue
The city pulled in roughly $2 million more in revenue than expected this year.
The cash, which comes mostly from an increase in tax revenues, gives the Bend City Council a chance to play Santa Claus—a rare role for the council, which has governed through some of the worst of an economic recession.
Junk on Downtown Sidewalks A Problem
Earlier this year, the owner of a shop downtown stacked her snow tires on the sidewalk outside her door and tried to sell them.
That and all the other random uses downtown business owners are finding for sidewalks—folding tables, racks of clothes, brochure displays—is a problem, representatives of the Bend Downtowner’s Association told the Bend City Council Wednesday night.
Former Redmond Citizen of the Year Dies
Richard “Ric” Nowak, who ran Country by Design Antiques in downtown Redmond, passed away June 17.
Nowak was well known throughout Central Oregon through his roles on the Redmond City Council, the Deschutes County Landmarks Commission, the Redmond Historical Society, and on the Redmond Chamber of Commerce and Convention Visitors Bureau Board.

The owner of the blue and green food cart famous for the chicken waffle sandwiches drenched in lime syrup said he plans to stay in the location throughout the rest of the summer.
