On a recent hot Friday afternoon the Wayfarer Club in the cozy confines of the SCP Hotel in downtown Redmond is fairly packed, with only a few empty seats to be had. The happy clientele appeared to be a mix of hotel guests and locals, probably more of the latter. Smoky skies and an unhealthy Air Quality Index did not seem to deter anyone from getting out and about.
The popular hotel is a triple winner in the Source readers’ poll, hauling in first place for Best Bar, Best Happy Hour and Best Lodging in Redmond.
SCP Hotel General Manager Tobias Colvin offered a tour of the hotel including the rooftop, which was closed to service on this smoky day. Visitors were welcome to take their drinks up there (though there were no takers), but Colvin said he wanted to protect his staff from working in the heat and smoke. The outstanding views would have to wait for another visit. We took the elevator up, but returned to the lobby on the stairs, many of which were crafted out of the original nearly 100-year-old wooden planks.
The welcoming and spacious lobby is an attraction unto itself. There’s even a working turntable and a crate of records waiting for lounging visitors to spin.
Colvin also responded to some submitted questions.

Tobias Colvin: It comes down to our concept of “Holistic Hospitality.” We believe food and beverage is energy — it’s how we care for the body, connect with our community and nurture the planet. Everything we craft is intentional, from our housemade cocktail syrups crafted from real ingredients like local Metolius teas, fresh produce and high-quality raw demerara sugar, to our cocktails designed and created by our talented and creative bartenders, to our “Wild and Free” non-alcoholic drinks. The “Verdita Bandito” is our most popular drink and showcases our creativity and commitment to quality craft cocktails. It is made with Hood River’s Batanga silver tequila, pineapple and lime juices, and a proprietary mix of green herbs and peppers for a unique, herbaceous flavor and a little bit of spice. We put the same level of creativity and execution into our non-alcoholic creations. We are finding that many of our customers who want to connect over a fun and fancy beverage without the alcohol really resonate with the Wild and Free beverage program.
tS: What can you say about your Happy Hour?
TC: We wanted to create a space and time that attracts our local community and makes it easy to enjoy an expertly crafted and refreshing beverage after a long day at an accessible price point. Our happy hour is also unique in that we offer it every day of the week — including weekends — from 3-5 pm.
tS: What is the SCP philosophy and goals of hospitality?
TC: Our vision is to make the world a better place by serving those who value wellness, kindness and the environment. Our core values are Healthy (personal wellness), Kind (social good) and Green (sustainable practices).
We also grow some berries, herbs, and edible flowers on our Rooftop garden to utilize in our handcrafted beverages. We reuse, recycle and compost everything that we can to lessen our environmental impact whenever possible.
