Bend-based filmmaker RA Beattie will bring his latest documentary film, Let’s Make a Fishing Movie, to the Tower Theatre on January 10, as part of the 2026 International Fly Fishing Film Tour (IF4). The screening marks a hometown moment for Beattie, whose work has screened internationally while remaining deeply rooted in Central Oregon.
Produced by Beattie’s production company, Off the Grid Studios, the film offers an honest and often humorous look behind the curtain of outdoor filmmaking. Rather than focusing solely on pristine landscapes and idealized moments, Let’s Make a Fishing Movie explores what happens when expectations collide with reality, and when the process becomes as meaningful as the outcome.
The film follows a high-pressure shoot in the Yucatán Peninsula featuring chef, author, and cultural figure David Chang, alongside local guides Jorge Angulo Tut and Mike Dawes. What begins as a straightforward production quickly evolves into a story about collaboration, frustration, vulnerability, and the unpredictable nature of creative work.
“At its core, this film isn’t really about fishing,” said Beattie. “It’s about process, trust, and what happens when things don’t go according to plan. We wanted to show the parts of filmmaking that usually stay off camera.”
Let’s Make a Fishing Movie is part of the 2026 International Fly Fishing Film Tour, the world’s leading showcase for fly fishing and adventure filmmaking. The tour travels to hundreds of theaters across more than a dozen countries each year, celebrating films that push creative boundaries while honoring the outdoors.
The Bend screening holds particular significance for Beattie, who has built much of his career in Central Oregon. Through Off the Grid Studios, he has produced award-winning films focused on storytelling, conservation, and the human relationship with place.
