As graduates across Central Oregon celebrate their accomplishments this month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, a program of J Bar J Youth Services, is encouraging community members to reflect on the adults who help shape their journey and consider becoming that person for a child today.
Through its June recruitment campaign, Big Futures Start Here, Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking volunteer mentors, particularly in La Pine and Redmond, where the need is greatest. Currently, 75 youth are waiting to be matched with a caring adult mentor.
โGraduation season reminds us that no one reaches their goals alone,โ said Jenn Davis, Program Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters. โBehind every graduate is someone who encouraged them, listened to them, challenged them, and believed in them. Through mentoring, our volunteers become that person for a child, helping them build confidence and create a brighter future.โ
Research shows that young people with mentors are more likely to graduate, pursue higher education, develop strong social-emotional skills, and make positive life choices. Through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships, Big Brothers Big Sisters helps youth realize their potential and achieve their biggest possible futures.
Mentoring does not require special skills. Just a willingness to show up consistently and build a positive relationship. Matches spend a few hours together each month participating in activities such as hiking, playing sports, crafting, exploring, or simply talking and spending time together.
One caring adult can make a lasting difference in a childโs life,โ Davis said. โWe invite community members to think about the person who helped them become who they are today and consider paying that gift forward.โ
