Cascade Natural Gas has decided not to proceed with development of a renewable natural gas facility at Deschutes County’s Knott Landfill.

Since 2023, Cascade and Deschutes County have worked together to develop a project to capture landfill gas currently being flared and convert it into renewable natural gas. Over the last three years, Cascade continually evaluated the project’s costs, benefits and long-term value for customers. Over the past three years, projected development costs have increased significantly, while changes enacted by rulemaking have altered the timing and reduced the volume of Cascade’s renewable natural gas needs. As a result, Cascade determined the project is no longer a prudent investment for customers.

“Bend is an important community to Cascade, and we value Deschutes County’s partnership,” said Hart Gilchrist, vice president of business development and external affairs. “While we are disappointed this project will not move forward, our commitment to Bend and our customers has not changed. We have a responsibility to make prudent decisions on behalf of our customers, and we will continue working to provide safe, reliable and environmentally responsible energy and to be a strong community partner.”

Cascade will continue working with Deschutes County as the parties take the necessary steps to conclude the project.
