Central Oregon Mastersingers will present its fall concert, Through the Valley, featuring the debut of The Understory, the organization’s new chamber ensemble. Performances will take place Saturday, October 17, at 4 p.m. at Sunriver Christian Fellowship in Sunriver and Sunday, October 18, at 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend.
Through the Valley takes audiences on an intimate musical journey through struggle, hope, reflection, and connection. The program traces a path from uncertainty toward light—and ultimately toward one another—through choral works spanning centuries, cultures, and musical traditions.
The concert features music by composers including Amy Beach, Caroline Shaw, Carlos Cordero, Undine Smith Moore, Pavel Chesnokov, Orlande de Lassus, Reena Esmail, and Billy Joel. Together, the works explore some of the most enduring human experiences: prayer, longing, resilience, hope, farewell, and the search for connection.
From the radiant optimism of Light of a Clear Blue Morning to moments of quiet reflection and deeply personal expression, Through the Valley invites listeners to slow down and listen closely—to the voices around them and to one another.
Introducing The Understory
The fall concert also marks the debut of The Understory, the chamber ensemble of Central Oregon Mastersingers. The new ensemble brings together a select group of singers for intimate, expressive, and adventurous choral music-making.
Designed for a smaller ensemble and a more intensive rehearsal process, The Understory explores repertoire that rewards close listening, individual artistry, and a deep sense of connection among singers. Its programs will range across centuries, cultures, and musical traditions, pairing established masterworks with compelling contemporary voices.
The name The Understory reflects the ensemble’s place within Central Oregon Mastersingers: rooted in the larger organization while creating space for new artistic growth. Through thoughtful programming and finely crafted performances, the ensemble invites audiences to experience choral music up close—where individual voices are heard, harmonies take root, and music can reveal something new.
