To help improve traffic flow, the City plans to remove a turn lane median on Greenwood Avenue between NE First and NE Second streets and extend the length of the eastbound, left-turn lane at NE Third Street. This will create more space for eastbound vehicles to queue in the left-turn lane before turning north. Currently, left-turning vehicles occasionally back up during peak travel hours and slow eastbound traffic.
The work on Greenwood Avenue is expected to start the week of Aug. 24 and will be complete before Labor Day weekend. The City will maintain one lane of traffic flowing in both (east and west) directions during construction. The City will close the inside eastbound lane while working in the middle of the roadway and the outside eastbound lane will remain open. The westbound lane will not be impacted and will remain open.
“While this should help with the intersection operation on a daily basis, it will also provide some help with this being a detour route for the upcoming Franklin Avenue underpass closure in mid-September,” said David Abbas, Transportation and Mobility Director.
Please use patience during construction, expect minor delays, and drive with extra caution to protect the safety of workers in the road.
After the curb is removed, the City will place delineators down the middle of the road to continue to prevent left turns onto NE Second Street.
