On Friday, November 7 at 6PM, Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe is hosting Oregon-based investigative journalist, author and podcast host Leah Sottile for a conversation about her new book, Blazing Eye Sees All: Love Has Won, False Prophets, and the Fever Dream of the American New Age. Why this matters to Oregon: Sottile has deep Oregon roots in her investigative work. She’s perhaps best known for her reporting on the 2016 Malheur standoff with the Bundy family, which she covered extensively in her podcast Bundyville. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and The Atlantic, and she’s the author of When the Moon Turns to Blood about the Lori Vallow-Chad Daybell case. Here is her website with a compilation of her work: https://www.leahsottile.com/
Now, in her latest book, Blazing Eye Sees All, Sottile investigates how New Age spirituality, while mainstream in many enjoyable ways such tarot, crystals, and wellness culture, also has roots in conspiracy theories, antisemitism, and rejection of science that should be understood and contended with. Sottile examines groups like Love Has Won (whose leader “Mother God” died in a bizarre case that made national headlines) and explores why Americans are increasingly drawn to these movements amid contemporary anxieties about climate, COVID, and political instability.
