As Munch & Music heads into its final free concert of the season in Drake Park on Thursday, August 6, organizers are highlighting the event’s continued commitment to sustainability through the efforts of its Green Team and community partners.
Five years ago, local resident Karrie Newman began collecting redeemable bottles and cans at Munch & Music to support local nonprofits. Those early efforts grew through the incredible leadership of Joel and Amanda Telford, along with their two sons and a dedicated group of local youth who have worked tirelessly each week to keep Drake Park clean and help educate attendees about recycling and waste reduction.
Joel, who recently passed away from cancer at 57 years old, poured his heart and soul into leading these efforts for many years. His passion for caring for the park and creating a cleaner, more sustainable event helped shape the Green Team into what it is today. His legacy continues through the work of Amanda, their family, and the many young people he inspired.
What started as a small effort has grown into a comprehensive sustainability program focused on reducing waste, increasing recycling, and educating attendees on responsible event practices. Today, the Green Team works throughout each event to help guests properly sort recyclable materials, support vendors with waste diversion efforts, and reduce the overall environmental impact of the concert series. With thousands of attendees each week, these efforts have become an important part of creating a cleaner and more sustainable event experience.
Through the use of Deschutes County EventCycle bins, support from Deschutes County Solid Waste, and the leadership of an on site Green Team coordinator and youth team members, Munch & Music has achieved a 55% waste diversion rate this season. Food vendors are now collecting mixed recycling, while beverage vendors separate cardboard along with specialty plastics, including ice bags and other event materials that would have otherwise gone to the landfill. The continued collaboration between the Green Team, vendors, attendees, and community partners demonstrates how simple changes and shared commitment can significantly reduce waste at large community events while helping preserve Drake Park and Bend’s natural spaces for future generations.
