Many Oregonians want to know how to protect the wild animals who live near them. Here’s a unique opportunity the whole family can participate in.
Registration is under way for the 2026 Oregon Roadside Wildlife Count. People can register HERE to participate at: https://environmentamerica.org/oregon/center/events/2026-roadside-wildlife-count/.
From October 17-25, Environment Oregon Research & Policy Center, our national network and other partners will be collecting data by using the app iNaturalist to record any animals (dead or alive) that are spotted on the side of the road. Anyone can sign up to participate. This event will help demonstrate the need for more wildlife crossings by drawing attention to how animals need to cross roads (even highways) to access fragmented wildlife habitats.
Wildlife crossings – which are usually underpasses, culverts or bridges – offer a way to reconnect natural habitats and reduce collisions. Each year in Oregon there are more than 7,000 large wildlife-vehicle collisions. Mule deer and elk as well as sensitive and threatened species, such as the red-legged frog and Western pond turtle, are at risk. These collisions spike during fall, due to the end of daylight saving time and increased animal movement due to seasonal migration..
