Three Prineville residents have officially become homeowners at Solace at Iron Horse, marking the first home closings in Thistle & Nest’s new neighborhood on Laughlin Road.

Over the past year, Thistle & Nest has built twenty thoughtfully designed homes in Prineville, with several still available for purchase. The homes feature 2–3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, covered parking, and fenced yards.

Energy-efficient upgrades and solar keep monthly utility costs low, further supporting the affordability of these homes. The site includes low-maintenance, water-wise landscaping suited to Central Oregon’s climate.

One of the new homeowners shared that “It all started with the simple thought of, ‘What if I applied?’ because with today’s housing prices, I never imagined I’d be able to buy a home. The homes themselves don’t feel like what people usually picture when they hear ‘affordable housing.’ They’re modern, energy-efficient, and when you walk in they feel open, bright, and way more spacious than you’d expect.”

This development reflects strong local partnerships, including collaboration with Heart of Oregon Corps and its YouthBuild program. YouthBuild participants helped construct two of the homes at Solace at Iron Horse, gaining hands-on trade experience, industry certifications, and practical job skills along the way. Solace at Iron Horse was also made possible through a partnership with Oregon Housing and Community Service’s LIFT program, offering grants and loans funded by through the sale of Article XI-Q bonds.

Solace at Iron Horse was created to serve working households in Crook County who want the opportunity to own, not rent, and invest in their future in Prineville. In addition to the local workforce, these affordable homes have the potential to provide stability for retired seniors, those living on a fixed income, and multigenerational households.

Thistle & Nest’s realtor stated that “affordable housing like Thistle & Nest is incredibly important for Prineville. It creates opportunities for local families, helps attract and retain a strong workforce, and keeps our small businesses and community growing and thriving.”

Thistle & Nest’s mission is to provide services, support, purchase opportunities, and stewardship for buyers of affordable owner-occupied housing.

Heart of Oregon Corps is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people through education, training, and leadership opportunities. For more information about YouthBuild, visit www.heartoforegon.org.
