Central Oregon Community College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) was honored to host the Portland District of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in Bend on November 25 and 26. “Small Business Saturday has become Americaโ€™s call to action to support the backbone of our economy and heart of our communities โ€“ our small businesses,โ€ said SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman. โ€œAmericaโ€™s incredible entrepreneurs create jobs, drive innovation, and strengthen our communities, shaping the unique character of neighborhoods across America.โ€

The SBAโ€™s visit underscores the critical role local organizations play in fostering small business growth. COCCโ€™s SBDC has long been a pillar of support for aspiring entrepreneurs and established businesses, providing expert advising, workshops, and connections to vital resources.

โ€œSeeing the growth and success of Central Oregon’s business community is a proud moment for our team at COCCโ€™s Small Business Development Center,โ€ said Jennifer Gould, director of COCCโ€™s SBDC. โ€œItโ€™s inspiring to witness how the determination of local entrepreneurs, supported by advising and resources, helps create a thriving and resilient business ecosystem.โ€

The Bend Chamber echoes the sentiment, emphasizing the strength that comes from collaboration. โ€œThe strength of our local economy comes from collaboration,โ€ added Katy Brooks, CEO and President at the Bend Chamber. โ€œWhen organizations like COCCโ€™s SBDC, the Chamber, and city officials work together, we build a foundation where businesses not only survive but truly flourish. These partnerships are what make our community and economy stronger.โ€

The visit included tours of several prominent small businesses in downtown Bend, all of which have worked with COCCโ€™s SBDC through advising and other services:

Bronwen Active Jewelry, 124 NW Minnesota Ave
Good Drop Wine Shop, 141 NW Minnesota Ave #2719
Lark Mountain Modern, 831 NW Wall St.
Dudleyโ€™s Bookshop Cafรฉ, 135 NW Minnesota Ave
Haven Home Style, 856 NW Bond.

Attendees included Bend mayor Melanie Kebler, council members Megan Norris and Ariel Mendez, and representatives from local organizations like the EDCO, Bend Chamber, the Bend Downtown Business Association, Biz Oregon, and COCC.

This visit also serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses year-round. COCC and the SBA encourage Central Oregonians to โ€œGift Big and Shop Localโ„ขโ€ this holiday season. Every purchase strengthens the backbone of the community and celebrates the innovation and resilience of local entrepreneurs.
