Why We Abide: Thoughts on The Big Lebowski before we watch it on the big screen

Somehow, The Big Lebowski has become one of the most important films of the past 20 years.

Without the Big Lebowski, I would have no knowledge of a White Russian, nor would I know how to make the drink, subsequently enjoy it and mix it every time I found myself in the rare presence of a self-serve bar equipped with vodka, Kahlua and cream. Without The Big Lebowski, I wouldn't remember anything about 1991 or the old-school Iraq War. Without The Big Lebowski, “The Man in Me” would not be one of my all-time favorite Bob Dylan songs. And without The Big Lebowski, the dances I perform in crowded bowling alleys after scoring a strike would be more moronic than ironic.

Finding Narnia: Dog sledding through Bachelor's backcountry

Sara Roth takes a dog sled ride around Mt. Bachelor with Jerry Scdoris and Trail of Dreams.

For most people, sled dogs bring to mind races like the Iditarod or perhaps the silent, frigid world of Jack London, where spittle freezes before it hits the ground and animal carcasses are the last resort for warmth before hypothermia sets in. These were the images in my mind when, last week, I ventured to Mt.

Our Picks 12/22-12/30: Christmas Bird Count, 2nd Hand Soldiers, and more!

The Pitchfork Revolution
thursday 23
We know some Bendites have string-fever and what better way to entertain your visiting family who's trickling into town for the holidays than with some electro-acoustic experimental Americana-grass from The Pitchfork Revolution, a band that includes Jayson Bowerman, the guitar maker we featured in last week's issue. The local band's music includes the stringed sounds of the mandolin, banjo, plus the good ol' guitar and bass. Their song “Budz and Gunz” includes this line, which could sum up why we all love Oregon: “We chose to live here in Oregon because we like the mountains and the ocean.” Raise a pint glass and get down with some awesome bluegrass. $5. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

A Touch of Glass: Former Breedlove builder may have the “hottest” guitars on the market

Jayson Bowerman is one of Bend’s favorite native sons, a world-class kayaker and surfer who exudes a brilliant smile and “hang loose” grace seldom seen outside any island resort. His new line of glass lap and tenor guitars is the stuff drool was made for, instruments of distinction highly sought after by musicians for their resonant tone and natural beauty. His career began at Breedlove Guitars back in 1995 when the company was starting to build a name for itself. After a 15-year run at Breedlove Guitars as head of research and development in charge of their American guitar line, the 80-hour work weeks were starting to wear his spirit down.
