“In the course of a week, I've found whole pizzas, wrapped sandwiches, bags of onions, garlic, shallots, salad mix, boxes of donuts and cookies and all kinds of vegetables,” says a 20-something Bend resident who is also an on-and-off dumpster diver. He tells me his name is Mr. Nobody, and doesn't want his identity known because in many instances, dumpster diving equates to trespassing.

The Cool School: Cada Casa redefines learning through sincere interest and passion

After finishing his undergraduate degree, 26-year-old Tymon Emch took time off to study for the MCAT and work and volunteer at a hospital. He hoped the latter experience would move him a step closer to his goal of becoming a pediatrician.

After finishing his undergraduate degree, 26-year-old Tymon Emch took time off to study for the MCAT and work and volunteer at a hospital. He hoped the latter experience would move him a step closer to his goal of becoming a pediatrician. During that year after college, it occurred to Emch that medicine might not be exactly what he wanted. So he changed directions. Today, Emch works with Bend youth, but in a different way than he once imagined. Emch founded Cada Casa, a non-profit organization focused on community education.

No Day but Today: Rent hits the 2nd Street Stage

A youthful take on the legendary musical Rent.

Rent, the Pulitzer prize-winning musical about struggling musicians and artists living in New York's Lower East Side during the early '90s AIDS epidemic, is a difficult show – vocally, physically and emotionally – for any seasoned performer to complete. Meet the Writers: A sampling of the authors at The Nature of Words

Brian Turner
This poet is the author of Here, Bullet a collection of poems centered on his time serving in the Army during the Iraq war. Turner, who Benjamin Percy called one of his favorites when he appeared in Bend last month, was on the ground in Iraq at the war's onset in 2003 and the poems in his debut collection recount some of those experiences. This year, Turner published his second collection of poems, Phantom Noise, which again gave readers a look into the Iraq war, in addition to a glimpse into the minds of the soldiers fighting the battles. Turner's poems are marked by highly descriptive, yet largely straightforward language delivered in a crisp voice and hearing him read should only further bring his pieces to life.
