Delivering a Deadly Blow: Style and stupidity are the combative forces in Man With The Iron Fists

Man with the Iron Fists showed promise for about fifteen minutes and then began smashing itself in the head with its own fists for the duration.

Man with the Iron Fists showed promise for about fifteen minutes and then began smashing itself in the head with its own fists for the duration.
This mess is brought to us by Grindhouse maestro Quentin Tarantino, but written by Eli (Hostel) Roth and writer/director/star, RZA. RZA has come a long way from Wu-Tang Clan, but by being the man in front of and behind the camera he definitely shows us that he isnโ€™t really capable of being in either role.

The Torture Never Stops: Silent Hill: Revelation is a bummer representative for Halloween

Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington star in the 3D film Silent Hill: Revelation.

Silent Hill: Revelation has earned a seat at the worst movie of 2012 competition. This movie, like its predecessor, is based on the Silent Hill video games and may now join the ranks of videogame to big screen failures.
Taking over where the first Silent Hill left off, this new addition follows Dad (Sean Bean) and his daughter (Adelaide Clemens) in their plight to stay clear of the Silent Hill monsters. Itโ€™s all based on some sort of ridiculous medieval sacrifice to the gods in a coal-mining underworld.

Sprawl Together Now: Cloud Atlas chops compelling individual stories into a grandiose cacophony

Tom Hanks and Halle Berry star in the recent film Cloud Atlas.

There is nobility in striving for a cause that seems foolhardy, toward a goal that, if reached, could bring greater joy and understanding to the world. Thatโ€™s one of the many ideas bubbling through the sprawling Cloud Atlas, yet itโ€™s also pretty clearly a way of thinking about the project itself.
David Mitchellโ€™s 2004 novel seems like it should be unfilmable, with its six semi-stand-alone stories that span centuries from the 1840s to a 23rd-century post-apocalypse.
Youโ€™d have to be slightly nuts to think three different directorsโ€”The Matrix trilogyโ€™s Andy and Lana Wachowski, and Run Lola Runโ€™s Tom Tykwerโ€”could wrangle that material into something that works as a cohesive three-hour cinematic experience instead of a frantic, over-ambitious cacophany.

Ben Hurrah: Argo finds Ben Affleck once again showing his skills as a director of suspense

Ben Affleck and Bryan Cranston star in the newest film Argo.

Cheers, Ben. Here’s to your beard.
It seems absurd to those who still associate him with Daredevil, J-Lo and Gigli, but when our backs were all turned, Ben Affleck became a serious filmmaker.
That’s not the same as saying he just decided to make serious films; it’s easy enough to jump on board projects that seem pre-packaged with prestige. Instead, he launched his career as a director with low-key, character-based, tense, crime-fiction narratives that were also smart, efficient and restrained.

Trials and Tribulations: Idyllic home life takes a turn for the worse with In the Family

Sebastian Banes and Patrick Wang star in the film In The Family.

Did anyone ever tell you that you look like a young and more gay dennis leary?
When I started watching this flick my first thought was, something really bad is going to happenโ€”everything is going too well for this gay couple and their son. Sure enough, In the Family tells the tale of incredible loss and the personal strength it takes to get through the hard times.
The plot starts with two dads, Cody (Trevor St. John) and Joey (Patrick Wang), who are happily raising a six-year-old son, Chip (Sebastian Banes), in a seemingly constant state of bliss. Then one day their world is shattered when Cody is killed in a car accident and the battle between the deceasedโ€™s family and Joey over custody of Chip begins.
