On September 18, Bend had its first Open Streets event, closing parts of NE 1st Ave, NE 6th Ave and Hawthorne and Olney to vehicle traffic so that walkers, cyclists, wheelchairs and skaters could roam free.

Bend to Host USA Cycling XC and Enduro National Champs, 2015 and 2016
Mt. Bachelor’s trails will be two years old when the races come to town. Visit Bend is doing a good job with the bike-race-hosting thing. It was just announced that our city would be the site of the USA Cycling 2015 and 2016 cross-country and enduro national championship mountain bike races. What’s most interesting about […]
Bend’s Ian Boswell Kicking Ass at Paris-Nice
Boswell crashed hard yesterday, but is soldiering on. Today Ian Boswell (Team Sky) successfully finished stage 3 of the 7-stage Paris-Nice road race, considered by most to mark the real beginning of the European racing season. Here’s Boswell on today’s stage, which was won by another American, Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp). It ain’t easy over there. […]
Cyclocross Elite World Champs Now on Saturday
Yes, true story. The elite races in Louisville, Ky. are now scheduled for Saturday. Race organizers and the UCI are concerned about the Ohio River flooding, which would put the race course underwater. Oh, and this is the first time ever ‘CROSS WORLD CHAMPS have been held on AMERICAN SOIL. The NEW schedule: 9:45 AM: […]
A Story of Burly Bike Commutes
How long is your daily bike commute? Is it like that of New York resident Christian Edstrom? From a New York Times story published Jan. 25: Fastening his helmet, Mr. Edstrom stepped outside and into early-morning indigo. In a minute he was rolling down the driveway of his snow-covered Cape-style house, his headlights aglow, on […]
Lifespan of Local Lance Memorabilia?
Late last week, Lance told Oprah what we already knew: that he won all seven tours by doping and then lied about it. While Lance continues to get hammered for his less-than-genuine responses during the Oprah interview, we’re left wondering, what will his legacy be in Bend? How many breweries, doctor’s offices, bike shops, etc. […]
Oprah Talks to Lying Cheater, Gets Half Confession
You know what’s (kind of) funny (but mostly sad)? When I just Google-ed “what did Lance tell Oprah,” before I could type “Oprah,” Google auto-fills in “kids.” As in, “what did Lance tell his kids?” Ouch. In all this hoopla over Lance Armstrong’s doping confession, his back-and-forth pre-interviews with Oprah in Maui over Christmas holiday […]
Meissner Outlines Fat-Bike Policy
Not this ski season. That’s the official decision of The Meissner Nordic Board of Directors, who just met to address the issue of fat bikes/snow bikes on Meissner’s groomed terrain. In review: No bikes allowed on groomed trails THIS SEASON. There will be a sign posted very soon making this clear, Shawn McFadden, a Meissner […]
Jade Shines as Oregon Men Falter at ‘Cross Nats
Bend’s Ryan Trebon was a favorite going into yesterday’s USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championship race in Verona, Wis. And Chris Jones and Adam Craig, two more Bend residents, both had very real chances at finishing on the podium. It would not have been surprising to see at least two Bend racers inside the top five. […]
Craig Wins Singlespeed ‘Cross Nats
On a sloppy, cold and, in places, frozen Madison, Wisc. track, Bend’s Adam Craig rode away from his competition on the first lap and won the USA Cycling 2013 Singlespeed National Championship yesterday afternoon. Narayan Mahon AC in his trademark jeanshorts yesterday. Craig, who won the Singlespeed ‘Cross World champs in Dec., rode alone during […]
