Whisnant's Cyrus Family Protection Bill

Everybody thinks the Cyrus family is good people. We think they're good people. Government officials in Central Oregon think they're very good people.
They think the Cyruses are such wonderful people, in fact, that they keep trying to rewrite the laws for them.
The Cyruses, whose ancestors came to Central Oregon in pioneer days, have been hoping for years to turn their Aspen Lakes subdivision near Sisters into a destination resort. Last year, the Deschutes County Commission fiddled around with the county's new destination resort map to create a special loophole that would allow them to do it.

Greg Walden's Vote Against Women

In 1916, Margaret Sanger, founder of the organization that eventually became Planned Parenthood, opened the first center in the United States offering birth control devices and counseling. She was promptly arrested and jailed.
You won't get thrown into prison for passing out condoms in the United States in 2011, but the vote in the House last week to strip Planned Parenthood of all federal funding proves that the battle of women for full reproductive freedom is a long way from being won.
The vote on the amendment to cut funding was 240 to 185. Virtually every Republican – including our own Rep. Greg Walden, naturally – voted in favor. To their credit Oregon's four other members of the House, all Democrats, voted no.
The vote was the climax of what has every appearance of a well-orchestrated campaign to discredit Planned Parenthood, which is the largest family planning provider in the United States and serves more than 5 million clients a year. Video from a clever sting operation staged by an anti-abortion group aimed at showing that Planned Parenthood supports child prostitution got a lot of publicity; less well-publicized was the fact that in every case, staffers reported the man posing as a “pimp” to police.

Fidelity's New Skyline Deal Deserves Scrutiny

When is a deal not a deal? Apparently when one of the parties to the agreement is an out-of-state landowner that controls more than 33,000 acres of forest outside Bend's backdoor. At least that's what we can glean from the recent behind-the-scenes negotiations that have been going on between Fidelity National Timber Resources and a host of other stakeholders that supported a compromise deal two years ago to trade some limited residential and resort development on the northwest end of the roughly 100-square-mile forest that sits between Bend and Sisters.

Lawmakers, Ban That Bag

Legislators, do your duty and join us in giving plastic bags THE BOOT.

Behold the humble plastic grocery bag. It is small, flimsy and almost weightless, but in numbers it is mighty.
Since its introduction about 30 years ago, the plastic grocery bag has become as ubiquitous as the cockroach, but a lot more harmful to the Earth. An estimated 500 billion of the things are used worldwide each year. The United States alone uses about 84 billion.
Only 1 to 3 percent of these billions of bags are recycled. The rest end up in the environment – in landfills, or in lakes, streams, oceans, forests or your backyard.

Wyden and Merkley Fought the Good Fight

The United States Senate has been called America's most exclusive club. Like many old and exclusive clubs, it has developed a lot of quirky rules and procedures over the centuries. Some are just peculiar; others seriously undermine the democratic process.
Over the past year, Oregon's two senators have led determined fights to change two of the worst, most antiquated, most anti-democratic Senate rules. One of them won and the other lost. But both senators deserve props for giving it their best shot.
The senator who won his reform battle was Ron Wyden. His target was the “secret hold,” a sneaky and sleazy practice through which any senator could block action on any legislation for any reason, or no reason – and without even revealing that he or she was the one doing it.
