Read This 2013 Pulitzer Prize Winner

This year’s Pulitzer Prize winners were announced earlier this week and I was glad to see New York Times writer John Branch listed for his feature piece, “Snow Fall, The avalanche at Tunnel Creek.” It’s a moving, in depth analysis of the “sidecountry” avalanche that killed three of the 16 experienced freeskiers who were spendingโ€ฆ

Co-owner Erica Reilly hopes to be up and running by late May. Reilly, along with co-owner and chef Jeff Hunt,โ€ฆ

Former Bend Resident Rapped with Ghostface Last Night

Ghostface Killah lit up Portland’s Mississippi Studios Wednesday. But the highlight of the show was Jason Chung, former Bend resident and one-time Mountain Supply manager, rapping with Ghostface, on stage. He KILLED IT. Wait for the 53-second mark. Jaeho raps ODB’s verse on stage w/Ghostface Killah & Killa Priest @ Missisippi Studios from Paul Yihโ€ฆ

Two-Wheel Showdown

The sport of BMX made its Olympic debut in 2008 where it joined its road and mountain bike cousins on the world stage. While all three cycling disciples share a common denominator— a bike—the similarities end there. The cultures of the sports are as dissimilar as NBA basketball and ballet. This weekend the BMX Northwestโ€ฆ

The Muse of John Hughes

Most actresses search for the role of a lifetime for their entire career; it doesn’t often plop itself in their lap three times in three years. This was the case for Molly Ringwald when John Hughes cast her in the a trifecta of memorable teen films, Sixteen Candles, 1984, Breakfast Club, 1985, and Pretty inโ€ฆ

Wheels Keep Spinning

Over the decades, if not instantly after the book’s publication, "On The Road" has been lionized as a canon of wild life; it is, after all, the lightning rod for the Beat Generation, pulling together an emerging bebop jazz scene, reckless youth and casual sexual encounters. The driving force of that story is a taleโ€ฆ

Molly’s New Wave

“Pretty in Pink,” The Psychedelic Furs As the story goes, Molly Ringwald—herself a fan of new wave music as a teenager—handed director and then-friend John Hughes a copy of The Psychedelic Furs album Talk Talk Talk, pointing him toward the song “Pretty in Pink.” It inspired Hughes to pen a screenplay. In an interview withโ€ฆ

Screen Door Porch

In a state where livestock outnumber people six to one, getting a good turnout for a show in Wyoming can be hit and miss. Lucky for Screen Door Porch, a smoldering honkytonk husband-wife duo, they hit more than they strike out. “There are some towns [in Wyoming] with only like 20 people in them total,”โ€ฆ

Blunt Talk

Quite different from the flash, glam and bravado presented by most rappers, San Francisco rapper Andre Nikatina doesn’t like to be in front of the camera—except, maybe, to talk about sports. Somewhat elusive, he rarely gives interviews—and when he does, he gives just enough information to keep you wondering. But that reserved demeanor all changesโ€ฆ

Out of Town 4/10 – 4/18

portland friday 12 Janeane Garofalo Generation X icon, staunch feminist and self-proclaimed asexual, Janeane Garofalo is a walking, chain-smoking parody of her generation. Garofalo built her fame playing bit parts in some of the biggest films of the ’90s from the Gap-managing best friend of Wynona Ryder in Reality Bites to the Goth bowling superheroโ€ฆ

Forty-Five Candles

Molly Ringwald is one of those celebrities who is more famous for what she did decades ago than for what she’s doing today. At 45, Ringwald, seems OK with that—kind of. She is happily married and the mother of three young children (the twins, Roman and Adele, are in preschool and her eldest, Mathilda, isโ€ฆ

Brat Pack Lunch Box

With Molly Ringwald in town this week, we thought it was a great time to catch up with the Breakfast Club, and ask where they eat when they visit Bend. Andy (a bag of chips, chocolate cookies, three sandwiches, milk, a banana and an apple): I actually prefer New York City Sub (1075 NW Newportโ€ฆ

Our Picks for 4/10- 4/18

Matt Hopper thursday 11 MUSIC—It’s a mystery why Alaska’s Matt Hopper isn’t a household name. The illustrious singer-songwriter has accomplished a handful of pretty amazing things over the past decade: opened for Cold War Kids, lost his apartment to Bobby Bare Jr. and named his last album, Jersey Finger, after Richard Swift’s (Shins) bum digit.โ€ฆ

In the Name of Bikes

Now and again over the past few years, sharp little carpet tacks have shown up in the bike lanes of North Portland, popping bike commuter tires. They signal the ire of residents furious about the city’s plan to prioritize biking as part of a larger gentrification effort in the previously working-class neighborhood. It’s the storyโ€ฆ

The Truly Greatest Generation

Toward the end of The Breakfast Club, Dick Vernon, the no-nonsense assistant principal, is in one of the high school’s back rooms powwowing with the very Zen janitor, Carl. It is one of the few scenes in the Breakfast Club that doesn’t include the collection of iconic misfits who have been “sentenced” to a legendaryโ€ฆ

Talk Among Yourselves, They’ll Give You a Topic

In a democracy, every few years we have the option of throwing out those elected officials who refuse to listen to the people. But really, we’d prefer basic rules that allow us the opportunity to say our piece in the meantime, too. Bend city council sure isn’t making it easy. Consider its recent decision onโ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY, APRIL 1 Teen wet dream Justin Bieber is in the soup with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department over his alleged inability to keep saliva in his mouth. As you must remember from last week, the cops were called to Das Bieb’s residence after he reportedly raced his Ferrari at speeds of up to 100โ€ฆ

Letters 4/10 – 4/18

Yes, I am of the Molly Ringwald generation. And really, for those of you who make fun of the ’80s, I thumb my nose at you: You of the Dick Clark or the “N Sync” generations have nothing on Molly Ringwald. Like Molly Ringwald’s many teen characters, I was not completely of one group orโ€ฆ

Pretty in Hiking Boots

Molly lives in L.A., where, confoundingly, residents choose to exercise inside a gym rather than capitalize on the near-perfect 70-degree weather. Sometimes, though, on the most perfect 72-degree days, some So-Cal fitness fiends venture beyond the treadmill and choose to brave the walking paths that snake past the beaches. While this all may sound sillyโ€ฆ

What 5 things are always in your fridge?

I loved watching this video of fierce and foul-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay talking about what five things he always keeps in his fridge. I made a mental list myself: 1. A dozen eggs2. Bubbly water3. Real maple syrup4. Bacon5. Several types of good mustard What can you always find in your fridge?

Fiddlehead ferns: A flash in the pan

Don’t blink or you will miss the short season of the fiddlehead fern. Tender little delicacies, they are only in stores for a very brief time. I made mine with fresh spring peas, toasted slivered almonds and an orange scented bernaise sauce. Enjoy them before they are gone for the season!
