Extreme Pogo

Pogo may seem like a child’s toy to play around with on the driveway, but these guys have turned it into an extreme sport. A lot of the tricks they do are actually pretty crazy. Check it out!

Nintendo Game on Google Homepage – Right Now

If you’re super fried at work and looking to waste five minutes of your life, play this game on Google’s homepage. Old school. You can probably beat my score of 22. Yeah, it’s not really a Nintendo game, but it looks kinda like a version of this:

Push for Plastic Bag Ban in Bend

Tonight, the Stewardship for Sustainable Bagging, a non-profit organization put together by OSU-Cascades students, will offer a free showing of the documentary “Bag It” to support their proposed plastic bag ban in Bend. The goal of the organization is to pass an ordinance banning single-use plastic bags at all retailers and apply a minimum chargeโ€ฆ

Oprah Talks to Lying Cheater, Gets Half Confession

You know what’s (kind of) funny (but mostly sad)? When I just Google-ed “what did Lance tell Oprah,” before I could type “Oprah,” Google auto-fills in “kids.” As in, “what did Lance tell his kids?” Ouch. In all this hoopla over Lance Armstrong’s doping confession, his back-and-forth pre-interviews with Oprah in Maui over Christmas holidayโ€ฆ

Oregon Sheriffs Say No to Any New Gun Law Infringing on Second Amendment

Death Star Petition Is a No-Go…Bummer!

A colorado man decided last November to use our government’s “We the People” website to en”force” a jedi-inspired petition. The website lets anyone start a petition of their choosing and if it gets 25,000 signatures in 30 days, the White House has pledged to respond. So, some guy who goes by John D petitioned theโ€ฆ

Jade Shines as Oregon Men Falter at ‘Cross Nats

Bend’s Ryan Trebon was a favorite going into yesterday’s USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championship race in Verona, Wis. And Chris Jones and Adam Craig, two more Bend residents, both had very real chances at finishing on the podium. It would not have been surprising to see at least two Bend racers inside the top five.โ€ฆ

Climate Change Will Be Bad: Details in New Report

To sum up the new report from the National Climate Assessment Development Advisory Committee: it’s going to be really bad. More on that story from the Huffington Post. Or read the report for yourself. I went searching for something on the Internet that might help convince the disbelievers that this is a real problem thatโ€ฆ

What happened to the Root Sports Channel?!?

I was all prepared and pumped to watch the civil war basketball game earlier in the week, but when I tried to tune into Root Sports to watch the game, it wasn’t on. Apparently, BendBroadband had cancelled the channel because they couldn’t agree with the network on a new contract. As I checked out BendBroadband’sโ€ฆ

Craig Wins Singlespeed ‘Cross Nats

On a sloppy, cold and, in places, frozen Madison, Wisc. track, Bend’s Adam Craig rode away from his competition on the first lap and won the USA Cycling 2013 Singlespeed National Championship yesterday afternoon. Narayan Mahon AC in his trademark jeanshorts yesterday. Craig, who won the Singlespeed ‘Cross World champs in Dec., rode alone duringโ€ฆ

Beer of the Week: Sahalie

It’s not surprising that there’s only a few of these left in town. The made-in-Bend Sahalie is a wild-yeast beer by The Ale Apothecary. It comes bottled in a handsome 750-milliliter corked package, is somewhere 9%-10% ABV (depending on the batch), and tastes damn goodโ€”a mash-up of a Belgian golden ale and a sour. Thoughโ€ฆ

Concert Wish List

I spend a ton of time listening to music at home—much of it on my turntable. It’s a great way to experience a lot of what’s out there. Spending quality time with an album allows me to unlock the lyrics of the songs, discover nuances in the instrumentation and generally figure out my response toโ€ฆ

The Essence of Misery

There is no possible way I can even pretend to be objective about this movie. Not that I ever do so, but this is an especially bad case of me being hopelessly—and as far as I’m concerned—wonderfully biased. I love Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s rock opera. And by love I mean adore. I’ve memorized it. I can sing itโ€ฆ

Much More than Funk

I, for one, hate applying labels to bands. After all, these days, almost no band follows in the footsteps of a singular genre. Typically, bands are a mash of sounds they’ve fallen in love with or have been exposed to dating back to the time they were kids. That can lead to an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approachโ€ฆ

The Filmgoers Guide to the 2013 Movie Galaxy

As we travel into the frontier that is 2013, Hollywood will be riding last year’s wave of excellent films (Lincoln, The Master, Zero Dark Thirty) into the unknown. While a litany of sequels threatens to overwhelm the reels (Anchorman: The Legend Continues anyone?) there are a number of notables beyond the basic piggyback films. Hereโ€ฆ

Music of the Gods

Concept albums aren’t only for art-pop or hip-hop; they’re for singer-songwriters, too. For proof, listen to the trilogy of albums by Manchester Orchestra in which front man Andy Hull based all the songs on a 17th century sailor. For New York singer Dar Williams, her concept album comes by way of her ninth studio release,โ€ฆ

The Ale Apothecary: Sahalie

Golden. That’s how this earthy wild yeast beer looks. It’s also how it tastes—golden. Really, it’s a tremendous golden Belgian ale. The made-in-Bend Sahalie comes bottled in a handsome 750-milliliter corked package, which only adds to its allure. The sour taste, lovely carbonation and rich head—all of it just seemed so damn unique. Turns outโ€ฆ

Little Bites: Pho-shure! Steakerrific!

All that junky-looking brown paper on the windows of what was once Amalia’s? It’s coming down! And something fabulous will soon be happening behind those windows! That’s right. Amalia’s is doneskis. But the even bigger news is that PHO IS COMING TO DOWNTOWN. Tan Vo, the owner of Pho Viet on Third Street, confirms thatโ€ฆ

Winter’s Abundance

Walk the aisles of most local grocery stores and you’ll still find tomatoes, green beans and big heads of lettuce—all the summer season foods you love. Only this time of year, they taste more like starchy, watery cardboard. Not so with tender beets, robust cauliflowers and spicy kales. This time of year, these foods andโ€ฆ

Two Books at the Same Time

Last week I called up Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit From the Goon Squad, a 2011 novel that won a Pulitzer Prize. The book was lauded for its creativity as well as its ability to capture what it’s like “growing up and growing old in the digital age,” as judges put it. In it,โ€ฆ

On the Road with Woody

It’s the name of a cartoon woodpecker, a Pixar cowboy and a tune by Hootie and the Blowfish. But for at least two Deschutes Brewery employees the name Woody means only one thing—the 25-foot-long mobile beer barrel that serves as the friends’ second home. Last year Sean “Bubbles” McBride and Joey Pleich spent nearly 188โ€ฆ

Backing out on Juvenile Justice

Meetings are usually boring. Not this one. It was mid-December, just three days after the mass shooting of children in Newtown, Connecticut. The Deschutes County Commission was sitting at the head of a table in a room packed with attorneys, advocates and others who work with kids in Central Oregon with a history or violenceโ€ฆ

Kind of a Big Deal

“It would be a big deal,” said City Councilor Mark Capell. Capell was referencing the prospect of Nike expanding to Central Oregon, a possibility floated by Sen.-elect Tim Knopp during a Dec. 19 City Council session. “We’re in contact with folks from Nike,” said Knopp. Nike, which has been doing business in Oregon for nearlyโ€ฆ

Enough of the Fury Over Sound

Century Center held its last show on New Year's Eve, causing critics of the city’s new noise ordinance to shake their heads and bemoan the law as draconian and the reason for the center’s closure. Really, it’s time to move on. It's often said that a good compromise leaves all parties equally dissatisfied. By thatโ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY 31 Let’s end 2012 with the absolute worst news ever reported in the history of the universe EVER. Kim Kardashian is pregnant with Kanye West’s baby! Shocking millions around the globe who’d naturally assumed that a human could never successfully mate with a reptilian gargoyle, Kanye broke the terrible news to 5,000 New Jerseyโ€ฆ

Donkeys in Danger

I’ve got good news; I’ve got bad news. First, the bad news: The networks have staunchly refused to give my reality show, High-Diving Donkeys a green light. Their rejection letter said something about how a show involving 12 donkeys living together in one house while competing against each other in high-diving competitions “isn’t commercially viable.”โ€ฆ

THEY TOOK UP ARMS FOR A REASON A patriot in 1770 was no different than a modern man in 2012. He was a man who had a home, a family, and a job to go to every day. He was as comfortable in his home and his life as men are today. He loved hisโ€ฆ

One of a Kind

To the untrained eye, most independent record stores seem the same. Retail space is largely allocated to compact discs and used DVDs, with a much smaller area reserved for vinyl record sales. Many stores host live performances by local bands or touring artists—although some do it with more frequency than others. Typically, the main differenceโ€ฆ

First Turns

Editor’s Note: Over the next few weeks the Source is running a five-part series on a few of the icons of Bend’s outdoor scene. In the early '50s when Terry Foley was an 11-year-old kid, he and a couple of friends from town would often catch a ride with someone’s mom or dad up Skylinersโ€ฆ
