Beer of the Week: Claymore Scotch Ale

It’s not a local beer, but it’s AVAILABLE locally, it’s from the American West and it’s good. Better than caber toss. In case you’re not up on your Scottish vernacular, a claymore is a medieval two-handed longsword. While it didn’t take two hands to hoist this 7.7% ABV brew, the Great Divide Brewing Co. beerโ€ฆ

Lifespan of Local Lance Memorabilia?

Late last week, Lance told Oprah what we already knew: that he won all seven tours by doping and then lied about it. While Lance continues to get hammered for his less-than-genuine responses during the Oprah interview, we’re left wondering, what will his legacy be in Bend? How many breweries, doctor’s offices, bike shops, etc.โ€ฆ

Co-owner Marta Boelens said they’ll pour theโ€ฆ

Beer of the Week: Descender IPA

Great label too. Paperless! This is a great beer. Great because at 70 IBUs, it’s a balanced NW IPA. GoodLife didn’t fall under the we-must-make-the-hoppiest-damn-beer-you’ve-ever-tasted spell that seems to have afflicted so many fine brewers in our region. I’ve been on an IPA break since summer. For me, fall is fresh hop season, which givesโ€ฆ

Pat Gundy, operations manager at Living Options for Teens, wants people to know that at LOFT, the show is going on. Where the Sun Don’t Shine

If we must be subjected to boundless political advertising, we should at least know who's paying for it. That's the reasoning behind Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden's efforts to tame the political big game unleashed by the Citizens United ruling handed down two years ago Monday. When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendmentโ€ฆ

Johnny McVenture, NEAR CRATER LAKE:

The Real Solution to School Safety

The tragedy in Newtown, Conn., last month really hit home for our family. One Day at a Time

MONDAY 7 France is currently under siege from a scourge far worse than the great Parisian herpes outbreak of 1987. That’s right, preggo Kim Kardashian and her bamboozled baby-daddy Kanye West are in Paris. Today the loathsome pair were spotted spending oodles of francs at fancy-pantsy boutiques and dining at the uber-posh L’Avenue restaurant. Beforeโ€ฆ

Religious Rider

In the late '70s Dennis Heater threw fat tires on an old single-speed road frame and, in doing so, created one of the world’s earliest mountain bikes. Off-road cycling became an immediate passion. Nearly a decade later, after years of racing and bicycle upgrades, he found himself in the middle of a 100-mile race withโ€ฆ

America, F***, Yeah!

Too soon? Too soon for a kickass political action movie about the hunt for Osama bin Laden? It’s been less than two years since a black-ops team of elite American soldiers executed the purported mastermind of 9/11, without any sort of due process, on the sovereign soil of another nation. Or maybe it’s not tooโ€ฆ

Psychos “R” Us

I’ve recently come to the unpleasant realization I might kind of just possibly maybe kinda sorta be a psychopath. I arrived at this determination in two ways: 1) I re-read a year’s worth of my TV columns, and 2) Wikipedia told me so. According to the definition on the “psychopathy” page, “Psychopathy is a personalityโ€ฆ

Daybreak, The Cancel

Daybreak The Cancel Ukraine has had a little cultural obsession with trying to be more like America, from what I can tell. They smoke American cigarettes, watch American TV shows and try like hell to make American style music. It’s just that, typically, Ukrainian music plays off sounds buried deep within our country’s past. Oneโ€ฆ
