The Fire Photos We Couldn’t Fit in the Paper

Last week we sent a writer to the Warm Springs fire. She talked to fire management officials, Bureau of Indian Affairs officials, wildland firefighters and community members. Then she wrote a feature for this week’s issue (on stands late tomorrow!) about what she saw, heard and learned. She snapped a lot of photos. Below areโ€ฆ

Community Bill of Rights

We’re not sure whether this is grab the pitchforks-and-torches meeting, or a more pleasant let’s-help-each-other-out-with-their-vegetable-beds, this evening is intriguing “Community Bill of Rights Workshop.” Paul Cienfuegos identifies himself as “the West Coast’s leading community rights activist” (although his website doesn’t do much to explain that claim; er, 1000Fires.com) and says he will explain how localโ€ฆ

New Lead in the Case of the Disappearing Bees

Much has been made of the troubling spike in bee deaths and resulting scarcity of the industrious little pollinators. The bee-shortage, which we wrote about two weeks ago (See: Bend’s Buzzing), is a big deal because A. bees pollinate 40 percent of the food we consume, and B. that’s $30 billion worth of crops. Scientistsโ€ฆ

Did the fire look at you?

With fires to the north and south, the Source has sent out writers to report back from the front lines. Those stories will appear in next week’s special “fire prevention issue.” In the meantime, our recommendation for movies about firefighters: Gold medal: Backdraft (1991)โ€” A family of square-jawed Chicago firefighters (including William Baldwin) struggle withโ€ฆ

All Day Long

Finally craft brewers have figured out that not every beer has to be so heavy that it's one-and-done. Oftentimes, a light, easy-drinking, “give-me-another” makes more sense. (Plus, better for business, am I right?) Enter the simple session ale, this summer’s beer du jour. Hood River’s Full Sail Brewing has been making Session Lager (5.1%, 18โ€ฆ

Summer Reading

OK, only one is actually about bees, but the other two have “bee” in their names. Give us a break: It's summertime. Little Bee, Chris Cleave (2005) Chris Cleave’s first novel, Incendiary, about a bombing in London, was released the same day as an eerily similar bombing. The coincidence catapulted him to fame, and toโ€ฆ

Mining Rush?

Until recently, as other states, to the dismay of environmentalists, cashed in on their natural resources like coal, precious minerals and underground oil fields, Oregon seemed quietly removed from such industries and debates. But suddenly, Oregon is in the fray, with several major projects to extract and ship natural resources in the works: For theโ€ฆ

There is no free concert

It was 4 pm and the temperatures were pushing 100 degrees. But that didn’t seem to discourage anyone: The grassy knoll at Les Schwab Amphitheater was crowded; a few hundred concertgoers gathered on a patchwork of red, gray and blue blankets. Some sheltered under umbrellas while others shuttled between their sun-warmed beers and the nearbyโ€ฆ

Mountains out of molehills

Talk about creating potential from paltry: What was once an unused tract of dirt and grass beside and behind Seventh Mountain Resort’s tennis courts is now a dynamic bike park playground. Ever since it was created nearly a month ago it has attracted riders of all skill levels, from gapers to certified huckers and agesโ€ฆ

AirBnB roped into city tax

AirBnB and other informal services through which homeowners rent out their homes have remained largely unregulated by the same agencies and rules that govern hotels. But as those rental have grown in numbers (and market share), so has grown cities' interest in taxing them. Last Friday, the city of Bend issued a press release announcingโ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY 15 Let’s start by checking in on the “First Family of Monstrosities”: the Kardashians! Letters 7/17 – 7/25

Dogs and people I'd like to direct this to the small, yet vocal, group of dog haters in this town, even though I know that they probably will be the least likely to read what I am going to say. It is now a proven, unarguable, fact that if it were not for dogs ourโ€ฆ

A Day in the Life

Fruitvale Station starts with an ending. In cell phone footage, all shrieks and shaking, we see the final moments of Oscar Grant—a 22-year-old black man from Oakland who became, long before we mourned for a boy named Trayvon Martin, a symbol of society’s profound struggles with race, police brutality, and privilege. It is a fewโ€ฆ

Swayze Summer Continues!

In 1982, Francis Ford Coppola had just wrapped up the first—and most important—decade of his career. He bounded through the Godfather trilogy and, in 1979, earned his third Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for the era-defining Apocalypse Now, a movie in which a brooding Martin Sheen serves as the main vehicle for aโ€ฆ

Corn, Four Ways

Grilled Sweet Corn Corn is one of the cheapest and easiest vegetables to prepare, which is why it makes an appearance at darn near every summer barbecue. The problem is, most backyard chefs botch it by under or overcooking, neglecting to use salt and butter, or grilling after shucking; no, no and NO! The ancientโ€ฆ
