Governor Kitzhaber’s Lunch Date With Central Oregon

The lunch-spot of choice today seemed to be the Riverhouse Conference Center, where Governor John Kitzhaber addressed a couple hundred local business leaders and community members as the keynote speaker at the Economic Development for Central Oregon annual luncheon. “Oregon is open for business,” Governor Kitzhaber proclaimed, enthusiastically beginning his address to Central Oregon. Owsley Stanley, the Acid King, Passes on

It’s one of those six degrees of separation things. Reading the obit of Augustus Owsley Stanley III, I immediately flashed back (bad pun) to the sixties, life in Berkeley, Owsley as the world’s leading manufacturer of LSD and some connection to him I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Trying to come up the connection,โ€ฆ

Geekology: iPad part deux

The intended goal of our Portland-area trip this past Friday was to bring two local 12-year old fashionistas face-to-face with the wares at the recently opened outlet for Swedish retailer H & M. That location just happens to be in that most American of American places, The Washington Square Mall in that that oh-so-suburban communityโ€ฆ

Get Old Timey at Tonight’s (not so) Secret Speakeasy Party

OK, I’m not supposed to tell you about this (not true), but there’s a secret (it’s really not that secret) party going down in Bend tonight. The Speakeasy, as the party is known, is hosted by Source columnist Columbine Quillen and her fellow party purveyor Erica Reilly and has a Prohibition-era theme to it.

This is the first installment of the Source Weekly's new “Lounge Lizard” column in which our intrepid writers set out in search of a nearly lost art form: The Classic Cocktail Lounge. As is always the case, the Bend music community is rallying tonight to help one of their own. Tonight’s Breathe EZ Concert at the Century Center is a benefit for Erin Zurflu, one half of the longtime local acoustic outfit, The Erins, who was recently diagnosed with a tumor in her lung.

Riding High: Miki Keller Makes Women's Motocross a Serious Sport

Motocross, the sport featuring people riding souped-up dirt bikes around a muddy track and flinging themselves off of jumps, doing tricks like the “superman,” has been growing in popularity since it was introduced in the United States in the 1960s. Today, some riders are as popular as rock stars and those at the top ofโ€ฆ

Deschutes Brewery Continues Eastward Push: Now in South Dakota

Whenever I reconnect with a long-lost friend and tell him where I’m living, he’ll almost certainly respond by saying something along the lines of, “Oh Bend. Yeah, that’s where Deschutes Brewery is, right?” Well, that phenomenon isn’t going to die out anytime soon, especially with Deschutes announcing today that their push into the Midwest hasโ€ฆ

American Workers Can Learn From Gaddafi

As Muammar Gaddafi (sic) loses his grip on Libya, one wonders how he was able to hold on for so long. For most of the people living on Earth, the name Gaddafi is synonymous with Libya. So how'd he do it? Divide and conquer, that's how.

Beer To Go: Bend's Cycle Pub

MicroCosmos didn't make it down to WinterFest this year due to prior contractual obligations, but we heard tell of a magical traveling beer bar on wheels aka the Bend Cycle Pub, which made its 2011 debut during recent festivities. If you haven't yet seen or sampled the Cycle Pub, it's the 16-seat, people-powered bar/tour bus.

Ode to Packy and Dr. Matt Maberry

Last week, I had the great pleasure of writing a book dedication that was – like my last column on the Vandervert Family – another “labor of love.” Pat Maberry, wife and companion of my dear old friend Dr. Matt Maberry from my OMSI/zoo days has with the help of author, Michelle Trappen, developed aโ€ฆ

The Charlie Sheen Network

First of all, it should be noted that Charlie Sheen – if he's still alive – is making me look bad. Not to brag, but I've been doing this “banging hookers/guzzling liquor/snorting goofballs” shtick for the last 15 years – and yet has a single producer from Good Morning, America asked ME for an interview?โ€ฆ

Adele – 21

When you put out a cover of an insanely popular song – especially a beloved one that's been danced to at weddings and cried over after breakups – you're announcing yourself, in a way, to the world. And with Adele's cover of the Cure's “Lovesong,” the British girl that swept the Grammys in 2009 soarsโ€ฆ

Flaherty's Prosecutorial Crusade

Zeal, in general, is a fine thing in a district attorney. We want a DA who goes after the bad guys with vigor and single-minded intensity. In his first couple of months on the job, though, Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick Flaherty seems to be channeling most of his zeal into going after county employeesโ€ฆ

So, Was That Just a Press Conference?

After receiving a notification late Tuesday afternoon when we were rushing to wrap up last week's issue, we made sure we had a reporter down at the district attorney's office on Wednesday morning for a press conference about.
