Election Night Mix Tape
Election Day is a strangely stressful time for some yet perhaps a relieving moment for others who would just as soon put their hand in a waffle iron rather than watch another nasty TV attack ad. Depending on your views, tomorrow night is either going to be a time to pour a celebratory glass ofโฆ
Meet Joe the Painter: Joe Kimmel takes post modern retro
It’s possibly one of the last few sunny Sundays this fall, but Joe Kimmel is inside, working hard in his studio. Thirteen wood panels lean up against the concrete walls of Kimmel’s space, many of them still in progress.
"I definitely have to look at it as coming to the office," says Kimmel, "whether it’sโฆ
Straightening Out Our Screwed-Up Elections
Isn't it great to live in a state that has vote-by-mail? You have time to read up on the issues and the candidates and give them some careful thought. You can vote from the comfort of your own home, as the cliché goes - a real godsend for elderly folks and the disabled.
Random Pre-Election Day Wanderings
Randomly wandering thoughts as we near the conclusion of Campaign 2008:
Sprawl or Intelligent Urban Design?: Bend’s Planning Commission Finally Approves Expanded UGB
Obviously Bend can’t expand the UGB fast enought to keep up with this kind of demand.By all accounts, the 16 months it took for the Bend Urban Area Planning Commission to define and approve a new urban growth boundary for the city seemed like a lifetime, but judging by the raucous applause erupting from theโฆ
Bachelor’s Pay More, Deliver Less Strategy
The Eye doesn't agree with Bulletin Editor John Costa about very many things, but one thing Costa says has always made a lot of sense to us: You can't offer less and charge more and expect to get more customers.

Our November Endorsements Reprised
Federal For President: Barack Obama For U.S. Senate: Jeff Merkley
And No Juice Box, Either
It was a scene right out of Pop Warner football. A player makes a good play, then commits a dumb penalty and the coach summons him to the sideline for an earful.
The player's benched. He pouts a little bit. And after the coach has some time to think, tells the player, "You knowโฆ
Moving With the Sun: Monarch butterflies’ long trip south and back again
Snow Geese & MonarchsThis is it, Good People, the time when Mother Nature's Children must obey the Sun. Whether it be Monarch butterflies, Snow Geese, hummingbirds, night hawks, plovers, whales or Flammulated Owls, they can not stop themselves from obeying the Call of the Sun. Even human Snowbirds traveling south in their gas-guzzling Mini-Winnies mustโฆ
Shine a Light: Solar power your way through winter
BEATING SAD Sunset over Maui: not very SAD.At 2am on Sunday November 2, we "fall back." I call it the "Saddest Day of the Year." Thank goodness the Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended Daylight Savings Time one extra week, but all too soon it will be dark when you go to work and darkโฆ
Bloodbaths and Buzz-cuts: Inner turmoil reigns supreme in gritty cop drama
The Norton effect. A family of Irish cops and police corruption… sound familiar? Yes, Pride and Glory has all the makings of a formulaic, seen-it-before storyline, but at the hands of writer/actor/director Gavin O' Connor (Tumbleweeds) it takes on an original, seedy life of its own. This is actually a pretty good movie.

Ultimate Fright: My top 10 horror flick picks
1) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (dir: Tobe Hooper) 1974
By far the best horror movie ever is this original TCM classic. It's surprisingly not as gory as the title infers, but the twisted saga of Sally and wheelchair-bound Franklin travelling with some friends goes hazardously awry after they pick up a hitchhiker whose brother makes "headcheeseโฆ
LAHF or Die: Larry and His Flask are back, plugged in and louder than ever
The old Larry & His Flask. Check out the updated version at two shows this weekend. Larry and His Flask, Redmond's fun-loving punk band is back in electric action for the first time in three months. Crossing Over: How Person People became Bend’s most exciting live act
The answer to the age-old Question: How many Person People members can you fit on the Domino Room stage. Gathered around a table tucked in the back of a downtown coffee shop, four members of Person People (less than half of the hip-hop collective's total enrollment) are contemplating what it means to be what manyโฆ

Wanted: Good Buns…as in the bread that holds your burger
Nice Buns, Hon. My boyfriend is a hunter, so we have a freezer full of ground venison. I season the burger just right to bring out its flavor, and he grills them to a point in between mediumโฆ

Blowin’ In The Wind
This past week the State of Oregon sent out a health advisory announcing that a former mine and toxic waste disposal site along the Deschutes River near Terrebonne is nothing to worry about. That's news to neighbors who say they have been inundated with what they say are cancer-causing dust clouds. They say the stateโฆ
For U.S. Senate: Jeff Merkley
You don't often see as hard fought and at times ugly campaign as the one between incumbent U.S.
For President: Barack Obama
It's been said that next week's election is a referendum on the past eight years, which have been characterized by the catastrophic mistakes of the current administration. Senator John McCain has labored hard to distance himself from that storyline.
Bend Voters’ Choice: Community Interests vs. Special Interests
Bend voters have a clear choice between community interests and special interests in the November 4 election. Four City Council candidates-Jim Clinton, Linda Johnson, Peter Gramlich and Jodie Barram-stand out because they have demonstrated a commitment to the community and are not beholden to special interests. Their four opponents-Don Leonard, Kathie Eckman, Tom Greene andโฆ
Political Intolerance
Somebody - we think it might have been Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes - said that freedom of speech means freedom not just for the speech we like but, more importantly, freedom for the speech we don't like. In this frenzied presidential election campaign, hysteria is mounting on both sides and people are showing theirโฆ
Numbers Don’t Lie: Palin loses Alaska, race baiting and Madonna’s sex schedule
With the latest poll numbers showing Obama's lead widening, Sen. McCain appeared this week on Meet the Press to engage in a Bush-esque denial of reality, claiming that the race was actually getting more competitive in battleground states (perhaps because McCain is bailing out of key states like Michigan and conceding them to Obama). Theโฆ
Do The Right Thing
We're not sure who penned this week's top letter, maybe Ms. Manners, but we can't help but agree.
BAT is No Frill
Soviet Leader Vladmir Lenin said, "A lie told often enough becomes the truth". Unfortunately, sometimes once is enough. Accordingly, this letter is a response to the 10/24/08 letter by Steve Stambaugh wherein he states the ridership of BAT "is declining….down to one person per mile".
That claim is as far opposite from facts as theโฆ
Support Barack
I believe the health, perhaps even survival, of our nation depends on three issues: the economy, energy and our relationships with foreign nations. America is weakened. Our economy is stumbling, our infrastructure is crumbling and we are militarily over-extended. I support Barack Obama because I believe we must change direction, significantly. We've been on aโฆ
Country First?
One opportunity the Obama campaign is missing (and they seem to be doing just fine without me) is that they're not posing the question, "Did John McCain put his country or his election first when he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate?" We all know the answer: he chose her because he thought itโฆ
Take a Look at Dallas Brown
Nothing has done more to alienate voters from the democratic process than the lack of clear choices and substantive debate. Local elections in particular tend to ignore the most important issues in favor of well-intentioned but meaningless platitudes. With so many pressing issues facing our community, I refuse to allow another election pass us byโฆ

Could Cruz Cruise Out of Drake Park?
The Flashback Cruz has always been one of The Eye's favorite Bend summer events. We're not really a car aficionado, but it's still fun to go down to Drake Park and look over all the polished-to-perfection, tricked-out classic and exotic vehicles.
