John Butler at the Athletic Club of Bend: 9.9.08

Here’s a rundown of JBT’s show in Bend on Tuesday night. We’re still trying to get some video and pics up here … bear with us, they’ll be up soon.

We hadn't made it out to a show at the Athletic Club of Bend yet this summer, but we'd heard a thing or two aboutโ€ฆ

McCain Is Not the Answer

McCain has a long history of working against workers. He has worked with large corporations and the right wing to weaken and destroy organized labor by supporting right to work (for less) laws, he has attempted to limit overtime for workers by radically overhauling the Fair Labor Standards Act and he has blocked a Senateโ€ฆ

There’s fungus among us

Our world, as we know it, would cease to exist if it weren't for fungi, (the plural of "fungus" is "fungi") which is among us everywhere whether we like it or not, and is – hopefully – here to stay. When a deer, cockroach or elephant dies there are a whole string of events thatโ€ฆ

I Love the Deschutes: Upriver, Downriver and In Between

How lucky am I? The Deschutes River flows through my backyard. Everyday, I watch the geese and the ducks, sometimes the swans, float by as I work in my home office. It's magical when the sinking sun bounces off the rippling river under the willow tree and sets my living room asparkle. My dog isโ€ฆ

SF or Bust: We get down at the first-ever Outside Lands fest

Editor’s note: Terribly agoraphobic, Sound Check couldn't muster the courage to get out of our Central Oregon comfort zone to check out the brand spankin' new Outside Lands festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. So, knowing that we couldn't let this event go uncovered, we sent intrepid Source contributor Kaycee Anseth-Townsend southward.

Don’t Dismiss Petitioners

This week's LOW comes from long time resident and frequent city council critic Barbara McAusland who seconds our recent Boot to the council's proposed time limit on initiative petitions. Thanks for the letter Barbara, you're entitled to a $25 gift certificate courtesy of Dinner's Ready for your contribution to this week's Mailbag.

I’m in the Zone

If you haven't been in to The Reptile Zone yet, you are missing out. I just took my friends who are nine and six (years old) in to meet Jeff and his reptile family and we all left 30 minutes later with huge smiles on our faces.

Quit Yer Bitchin!

Would someone please change H. Bruce Miller's diaper? His big fat tears about the "obnoxious noise pollution" over at LSA probably need wiping too.

Keep it Local

As another election season heats up, I just wanted to weigh in with my own opinion. No president can ever give me what I need - what I need is a vibrant local economy that sustains its members by keeping its dollars here.

Bangkok Ludicrous: Meandering Dark Remake Swallows Itself Whole

I left Bangkok Dangerous with several questions. First, why are remakes of Asian films in such high demand? It seems like an exercise in intentionally wasting time and money. Beyond that, why do Asian filmmakers like Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and now The Pang Brothers remake their own movies? Americanization saps the mystique and charismaโ€ฆ

Industry Round Up

Leaves are already falling and our two-month summer seems to be coming to an end and with it goes Bluefish Bistro. Chef Matt Mulder's popular downtown fine dining spot has closed it doors for good.

Roll It Up: Downtown food gets a little faster

Just a few months ago the proliferation of high-end restaurants combined with the closing of many less-expensive eateries had more than a few locals lamenting about the dining scene downtown. "Not enough lunches under $7 to choose from", "too few inexpensive places to grab a casual table service dinner" and "downtown has become a bastionโ€ฆ

Saying No to Airport “Renewal”

As the eminent British philosopher Mick Jagger reminded us, "You can't always get what you want." That's especially true if you're trying to run a local government in a period of shrinking revenues.

Cessna, the small-aircraft manufacturer, wants $4 million worth of improvements at the Bend Airport, including longer runways and a control tower. Oneโ€ฆ

What’s a Palinista

It's Always Half Full. Upfront made almost half of the 11 shows at Bend's biggest venue this summer. We were there on the cold and wet night that Michael Franti and Spearhead opened up the season by getting our beanie-covered heads bopping and we were also in attendance as the revamped Stone Temple Pilots closedโ€ฆ
