He was supposed to be mining for gold, but by the end of the summer, Jimmy Dorsey wasn’t up to his knees in riches, but rather sleeping in his truck and listening to the new Arcade Fire record. He was spending his days working for a commercial fishing outfit while also reflecting on the odd series of events that took him from a career as a prominent realtor outside of Portland to an Alaskan gold mine, where he’d somewhat reluctantly become a star of one of cable television’s most popular reality programs.
Gold Rush: Alaska – a show about unemployed and underemployed Oregonians who head north looking for a new lease on life at the bottom of a gold pan – has surprisingly become the darling of Discovery Channel’s winter season. And after five episodes, the show has been all at once tragic, inadvertently hilarious, troubling and, of course, thoroughly entertaining. But at the core of the multiple revolving stories surrounding the miners’ desire to pull gold out of the Alaskan dirt has been Jimmy Dorsey. Although, like the other men, he’s a devout Christian and, like them, wants to find a new life by way of gold, it’s nearly impossible to take in the first four episodes of Gold Rush without feeling for Dorsey. He seems to be the most driven of the bunch yet he’s constantly bullied by some of the other miners, including the boss, Todd Hoffman. And “bullied,” as odd as it may seem to be applied to grizzled miners, is precisely the word to describe the bizarre and mostly juvenile treatment this massively bearded father received on the show, and apparently, in reality. As seen on the show, Dorsey is repeatedly threatened by Hoffman (once because Dorsey merely told Hoffman’s son not to leave food out in the camp) and constantly made out to be a safety liability – which is odd because even casual viewers can gather that he’s one of the hardest-working crew members.
“There’s a lot to be learned about bullying. I dealt with it as a kid and it’s weird to be dealing with that when you’re 34,” says Dorsey. “If it works for [the bullies] then they’ll continue bullying later in life.”
The resulting stress and frustration from the bullying was instrumental in Dorsey’s decision to walk away from the mine during the middle of the season. He left without a cent in gold profits, despite the fact that he says he busted his ass to pull plenty of it out of the ground.
“I didn’t sign any contract. It was a true cowboy deal. It was just a deal that I’d get a cut of the gold,” says Dorsey.
That handshake “cowboy deal” he’s referring to also meant he had no formal agreement with the Discovery Channel, thus he’s free to divulge details from the series before the episodes air. Dorsey says that an upcoming episode of Gold Rush will show him leaving the camp, ending what – oddly enough – is just one of the wild adventures in his life.
Dorsey grew up in Clackamas County, Oregon and after enrolling in Mt. Hood Community College to learn how to play the stand-up bass, he soon dropped out, taking that instrument on the road for years to come, playing in touring rockabilly bands. Unlike his fellow miners, many of whom were in the building industry – or in Hoffman and his father’s case, operators of a small air strip – Dorsey has held plenty of jobs, including one as a snowboard instructor at Mt. Hood Meadows and another as a truck driver, but during the real estate boom of the mid-2000s, he settled down with his wife, Joy, (a talented Americana singer who, along with their two children, joined Dorsey in Alaska) in Sandy, Oregon, and began selling real estate. Soon, he had his own company with nearly 20 people working with him.
But then came the housing crash and the widespread economic disaster that followed.
“It was no big deal for me and I said ‘that’s fine, I was getting bored with this anyway,'” says Dorsey with a laugh over the phone from his real estate office where he’s still working a few days a week, in between things like “dynamiting classes” – which delayed our interview for a few days – and prospecting for gold in the hills of eastern Oregon.
“I’m terminally bored and it’s going to kill me someday,” says Dorsey, again with a laugh.
It may have been that boredom that convinced him to team up with Todd Hoffman, whom he knew through a hunting group, and several other men from the areas outside of Portland to take a stab at mining. He spent months preparing equipment, transporting that equipment up to Alaska and then working at the mine – all for no wages, only the promise of proceeds from the gold profits. At the time, Dorsey says he thought heading up to Alaska to mine for gold was less of a risk than staying home and trying to make it in real estate. But, as we now know, he never saw any of that money.
While mining was the objective, the crew was also dealing with a production crew who were shooting the program.
“It’s hard to separate the mining from the reality show,” says Dorsey, adding that he felt the producers had a penchant for stirring up the drama.
But the show, at least in the first five episodes, didn’t necessarily need more drama, as the crew provided plenty, much of which spawned from their wildly inefficient, self-destructive and apparently lazy antics. As Dorsey says, the crew brought tons and tons of heavy machinery up to Alaska, but neglected to tote along a single shovel, something that would seem an elementary tool for gold mining. Of course, this was the sort of crap that makes for great watching.
While the summer in Alaska hardly turned out the way Dorsey thought it would, he seems to be without regret, almost to a fault. He’s back in Oregon, selling real estate while prepping for his next mining adventure, which might be in eastern Oregon or it could lead him up to Alaska again. He says whatever he does, it will most likely be filmed for another television series.
“It was a crazy adventure and it’s getting crazier,” says Dorsey of the time in Alaska and the sudden rush of fame the television show brought his way.
“These are hard times and I’m glad that we went out there and did it.”

I don’t get it. Word is the whole operation was a bust, they found maybe 10oz of gold and had half a million invested. Now they’re all famous ‘miners’? They aren’t miners, they’re a bunch of wannabees. The show is an embarrassment.

My wife and I watch this show for our weekly laugh. I don’t know if it is the producers that make everybody look like a jackass or if all 6 of them are real jackass’s in real life. I applaude the minners for wanting to better their lives, be that through the tv show or actual minning they did have the sense of adventure to give it a try, for ratings or for gold.

Dorsey is a total disaster waiting to happen. He knows nothing about working in a dangerous environment and is lucky he did not get someone hurt or hurt himself. He is/was totally out of his element. Not all is as it’s shown. The Hoffmans are not broke. The oldman is a millionaire. The show is a con. They sold this “No guts no gloreee” to Todds buddies to get them to work without wages for 6-7 months, not counting donating their equipment to the “adventure”.

If the bears that they show are the same ones they claim to see at the time, these guys have no knowledge of bears at all. The Hoffmans are idiots. The older is senile and acts like a 4 year old who insists on getting his own way. The younger is much the same, but he bullies meek Dorsey. I would have thrown him out of his own house if his child hadn’t been there. What a jerk. Bullies like him are almost invariably pussies when you call their bluffs. I don’t like to see little guys get pushed around. Not that Dorsey is little, but he is devout (I admire him for that) and he was avoiding confrontation. But he was completely correct to bring up that the kid can’t be leaving bear bait outside. That made the bear more of a nuisance. I hope they were at least heavily fined for that bear’s death.
I won’t watch it again. This says a lot about America that this show is popular. Oh, and killing the black bear for trying to clean up after sloppy kids was horrendous: if they didn’t have licenses they should have been arrested. I’m surprised that they weren’t ( were they?). I won’t watch again to find out. Dorsey may have his heart in the right place from what I saw, but if he thinks any canvas-topped house is “bear-proof”, I’m sure that the first hungry bear that smelled anything tasty there would have peeled that back like a zipper. Brown bears (Grizzly) can peel back one inch plywood that is screwed into the studs. This has been experienced by other Alaskans. These bozos did no preparation at all. They could have used bear-proof containers and taken shotguns with rubber pellets, and used firecrackers. No need to kill these bears. What a disappointment.

I guess this all goes back to what the entertainment and media giants would do for a rating and/or agenda. I’m not really surprised though. Just look at all the stories in the news now-a-days about crimes that were committed with guns. Not that I don’t feel for the victims of them but where are all the stories that show how a potential victim kept from becoming one because of the proper use of a firearm? Or better yet, how many crimes were prevented just by criminals knowing/thinking that their “marks” COULD have them? Are we being conditioned for some future law making firearms illegal to own?
Not trying to get off the subject but if the ones in charge have a certain agenda in mind it’s easy to make the masses think it is in their best interests or to play on their emotions, something easily done with that box our parents told us would rot our brains. In a way they were right I suppose.
I let my emotions get caught up in this program because I admired the risk these men were taking, whether that be for the pay from the network or the gold harvested it still took certain courage and a sense of adventure on their part, something many men have lost in their lives these days for whatever reason.
This goes to show many of the reality TV shows we watch these days are anything but, whether just for ratings or something more. We have become slaves to, “I wonder what happens next?” Many programs are designed to do nothing more than to shift our attention from the important things in life. How many of us tell the family “just one second, they are about to score” or forgot what dinner at the table as a family was, only to be reminded once or twice a year on holidays if even then? My hand is up too!
Bad thing is I am aware of how harmful TV can be and how it is even used as a tool, but I still own 4 flat screens and have satellite on all of them. This is my speech for the day and I haven't even said a word about the newest tool, the INTERNET!
The only reason i watched the show was because Dorsey seemed like such a stand up guy. He should hook up with Bobby Goodson and become a swamp logger……..Or do a circuit through the discovery shows….dangerous catch, axe men, swamp loggers, dirty jobs….this guy is the only one of the bunch that will make something better of himself out of the experience.

In the following episodes it only got worse like when Dorsey was thrown out of Todd’s cabin for speaking to Todd’s child about the crackers. Did Todd forget that his “good friend” Dorsey was sleeping in a tent among the roaming bears? In my mind a christian and friend would have allowed Dorsey to sleep in one of the campers or offered up some floor space in the cabin? Where is the pastor friend? Why isn’t he speaking with Todd about his inhumane treatment of Dorsey?

What I don’t understand is…if these men & their families were SO broke & losing their assets due to a crashing economy…how is it that they could afford all the trucks, machinery, materials & also the funds to lease the land? If they could afford these things, why, instead of taking such a HUGE chance & risk, didn’t they use that money to pay their mortgages?

I had to stop reading everyone’s comments because people can be SO MEAN! I will never forget how it felt as a kid to be left stranded with my father at a job site because of problems we were having with the company truck. My father’s boss had to go to church rather than help us out. My mother drove our car >1hr to come pick us up…and the car was totaled during an accident along the way. We TOOK THE BUS home while the old boss was praying to god back home. Who knows who is at fault for what, but I remember feelings of being afraid and ashamed as a 3rd grade kid. Imagine how those kids FEEL being around all that drama. Some day they will grow up and wonder what all that praying really is for. Lay off Dorsey. His heart is in the right place. Maybe the only thing ‘wrong’ with him is that he has a LOT of passion. I hope that he sells a bunch of houses and makes his millions. I think life is more about Karma and what goes around comes around.
JIMMY DORSEY is a joke. He looks like he works hard be cause he works dumb. You can do things wrong over and over and stay busy or you can think about things and do them once the correct and most efficient way (don’t forget safety). IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU PLAN TO FAIL. A great show, but it was apparent from the start that Todd and his Grampy (or whatever he is) had NO idea what they were doing. Looks like it was a good claim, but as poorly as it is being worked they will be lucky to break even. Fact of the matter is, in that situation, EVERYONE is valuable for something. It is up to the leader to sort out the team and put them in a position they will be most effective in. I am not sure how it works in Oregon, but where I am from, if you speak to a man the way Todd did Dorsey on many occasions, you WILL carry them (your testicles) home in your pocket. Dorsey seems like a guy of reasonable intelligence, but with so many chiefs on the team, this plan was doomed from the word go. Good luck Dorsey,.

The one major goof was the team fix it guy. Dumb ass didn’t bring enough of hiss morphine, of did he and just take too much? As a chronic pain patient I would NEVER go on such a long trip with out bring enough pain killers and even some extra just in case. I could really feel his pain and discomfort, which the camera couldn’t come close to describing. I watch it on the internet and can’t wait for more shows. That old miner up the hill is no help. He looks like he gets a kick out of seeing failure. Even though the ending is inevitable, it rocks.

So many of the headaches and heartaches could have been avoided if these people would learn to communicate. Todd is obviously unhappy what people on his crew are doing at times, yet he doesn’t say anything until he blows up. Dorsey was not treated fairly but he couldn’t articulate his feeling without screaming and making who ever he was talking to angry.
How did Dorsey get THAT wife – she’s iabsolutely stunning. I’m amazed.

I’m glad others are finally seeing the issue with Dorsey instead of just defending him. I’ve worked with Dorsey types. They mean well, but their ego gets in the way. They want to be the leader and can’t accept that someone else is calling the shots. They get nasty and passive-aggressive. Instead of working to master the simple tasks that are assigned to them, they see those tasks as beneath them. They want instant promotion. Their assigned tasks are then neglected as they seek to undermine (literally, in this case) the boss and question his authority. He’ll always have trouble holding down a job, even thought he’s bright and competent. All he lacks the requisite humility, and I’m not sure that can be learned. Dorsey was even nasty with his adorable wife when he thought she was laughing at him. Again, all about ego. Be good to your wife, Jimmy. She’s a keeper.

Dorsey cannot be managed. He does not take direction, he tries to do everything his own way which in this show was always the wrong way. He was bullied early but that is because all these guys new he was a tool. I would love to see proof he was a succesfull realtor because really he shows no ability to think on his own during this show. IF these guys get gold it really makes you think anybody could do it. Todd started out as a hot head but in later episodes he tries to deal fairly with Dorsey but again and again Dorsey explodes for no reason. I think he needs balancing drugs. He was not rational in the last few shows and ended up getting his ass kicked by Greg who seems like a good guy.

I feel Dorsey made many mistakes due to being nervous and taking reckless actions, and Todd was really lenient towards handling these mistakes. Honestly, everyone knew Dorsey wasn’t experienced and probably felt he would hold them back. Which made Dorsey feel he had to show them he was capable by doing reckless opionated actions instead of referring to everyone else first. Since he has no experience, which is extremely important for big operations such as this, he made huge mistakes, which cost them a plethora. He should have helped more with the smaller things, consulted with someone first before making an unauthorized decision, and relax a bit. It’s a big thing to think you know more than everyone else when you’re the most unsure of anyone.
My husband just said that Dorsey is probably one of those kind of guys who comes off “meek” but ends up being and doing passive aggressive things that cause set backs and piss people off. Then he gets indignant about it. But I don’t know -I think it’s pretty clear from the get Todd acted like an unprovoked bully when it came to Dorsey and he was scapegoated. When he begins turning the tables on them they all get annoyed.
Some of Dorsey’s background info suggests he doesn’t have a strong work ethic in that he has been in and out of jobs for the last 20 years except for the fact he fell into real estate and had a successful streak.

This show was completely scripted. The script was made before the guys even got to the camp. Dorsey’s character was made up by the Discovery team. You guys who are criticizing Dorsey on the show are being conned by the Discovery channel script writers.

Dorsey wasn’t treated fair from the beginning. Toad bullied him(which was part of the script) the rest of the crew just fell in line. Toad should have called his dogs off though since he was the self appointed “leader”. Instead he let things get out of hand and his old school buddy handled it for him. After this episode I wondered why they hadn’t consulted the claim owner at the outset. I was glad to see Dorsey leave, though. His poor attitude and unwillingness to take direction from those who know more about how to work with heavy equipment made him a liability. Any “bullying” he brought on himself. And I won’t be watching any reality show that features him in the future. What a whiner!

None of the original crew is very impressive, but Dorsey was a disaster waiting to happen. He wanted to be accepted and praised based on the amount of work he did. In the real world of real man work you are accepted and praised based on progress and results. He’s like the little kid that got a D on his homework and then bitched and moaned that he deserved a better grade because he work on it longer than someone else that got a B. Granted, the workplace environment is pretty toxic, but there were numerous instances where he could have swallowed his pride and just did what he was told. Frankly, as a man, I found it embarrassing to watch his childishness.

I like the show. To me it shows all of the things that you should not do when doing any kind of mining. While it is an expensive way to learn how to mine, it is also somewhat informative. As for Dorsey, I think his temperment does not allow him to be a team player. While it was not smart to bring a non-mechanical person to a Gold Mine, it sure does make for entertaining television. It is my understanding that Dorsey had talents that were not used or shown on the shows. Dorsey claims he has a CDL and experience with truck driving. Maybe this is why he was added to the team. What annoys me is the elder Hoffman, he truly has “Gold Fever”, as he gets overly excited for the tiny little bit of gold that is recovered from the machinery. I like the mechanic Harness, he seems to be level headed for most of the shows. But like most people, if you are working hard and not seeing any payoffs then tempers will become short. I truly enjoy the entertainment provided by this show, and I think it is attempting to show that if you have a dream, you should try to fulfill your dream before it is too late. I hope that this group of men fulfill their dreams.
I have watched every episode thus far. Good reality show. Every week is pure entertainment. Love watching the sheer stupidity most of them display. The only one that had heart was Dorsey. There are a lot remarks on Dorsey’s stupidity , and what about the others ? I am shocked on how most of them being Christians behaved , giving true Christians a bad name. Regarding Dorsey, I don’t think he’s the kind of guy who handles criticism well in the first place. He wasn’t cut out for the kind of jobs he was placed in, BUT, Todd Hoffman being also a bit of a screw up, thought it better if the hostilities were placed a little farther from himself. In turn, he did nothing to stop Dorsey’s harassment and may have even encouraged it. A bunch of angry people in a messed up situation need a good scape goat to blame. Dorsey became that for them. It was a simple equation. An unfair one but too easy for everyone to arrive at.
When everyone wants to kill each other for what’s going wrong, in order to keep the peace, they’ll make a sacrifice instead and kill one person who seems the most responsible for their grief. Dorsey got that straw.
I would keep an eye on that Greg character. There might truly be something wrong with a guy who takes the situation that far and takes that much responsibility for ‘remedying’ it himself.
I applaud these guys for trying to do something to better their lives. It was something dramatic and foolhardy to be sure but who isn’t sometimes sick of the daily grind for small rewards? I’d like to see one fool win just for daring to try something different.

I think it is wrong to watch the few episodes of this show that Dorsey was in, and paint him as the victim. Based on what was presented in the show it appears that he brought alot of what happened upon himself. When you look at the skills that each man was able to bring to the table you quickly see that Dorsey is in fact the low man on the towtum pole. He made mistakes that men with more experience would not have made. Now this does bring up the problem of where exactly does he gain this experience. I would have to say a worksite where it is not as harsh or hard as the mine in Alaska. Beyond these mistakes Doresey showed a lack of experience in enteracting with coworkers on a worksite. When there is tension building between you and another coworker the last thing you should do is correct them, much less correct their child. Regardless of if this correction was justified or not, it was a bad choice. The best way to have handled it was to pick up the childs crackers and keep his mouth shut. It is amazing how keeping ones mouth shut on a worksite can actually heal relationships between coworkers. Now to get back to the idea of his coworkers being bullies. The bottom line is they were not bullies. They may have handled things in an inappropriate or childish manner, but not bullies. A bully is a person who seeks out things to give a person grief about. As far as what was shown in the five shows, Dorsey supplied these things. The way he was treated seemed to be a direct receprical of how he was treating. His coworkers wanted him to change, he did not, this caused tension, this tension built up, and he got his feelings hurt.
I think Todd’s daughter got sick from something living in his disgusting goatee/beard. Either that or something hidden under his wife’s makeup. Based on Todd’s behavior, she probably needs all that makeup to hide her bruises.

I recently discovered Gold Rush Alaska on Netflix.com. And after watching the final episode, I wanted to see what ever happened to Dorsey. A Google search lead me to this page.
Mike Bookley, you seem to have a tender spot for Mr. Dorsey, but I’d have to disagree with you on a number of points. You say he was a hard worker. Although that may be true, working in a completely different direction from your team is: #1 counter-productive and #2 an incredible waste of energy.
I work for a major public shipyard and safety is always our biggest concern. “Safety First” is ingrained in those of us who work with large machinery all the way down to machining small parts. Dorsey’s blatant disregard for wearing safety glasses and a face shield while grinding was a major concern for me. There’s a saying that “you want to go home the way you came to work.” Other people are depending on you, e.g. your family.
When Dorsey departed, I saw this as a positive for the Gold Rush team. The constant temper tantrums and not understanding how machinery works had me shaking my head for the first few episodes. When he was trying to level the wave machine and I saw him tightening a 5/8″ nut with a 15″ adjustable wrench rather than something more manageable, that just proved to me that he was inept. As much as I feel for the guy’s economic situation, I felt letting the crybaby leave was the best thing for everyone.
Todd Hoffman is the ugliest, laziest, disorganized fatty on TV. I cant stand to see him or hear his annoying voice. Somebody please punch that idiot.

First, The snoubal kids is ok. He’s young. He hustles. He makes mistakes and he says stupid things at the wrong time on occasion – like most teenagers. What isn’t like most teenagers is he’ll get off his butt and work. Yes, yes his grandfather built the “empire”, but how many kids spent their summer at the pool, the mall, on the sofa or exercising their thumbs?
The Hoffmans…..I really don’t know what to say. Too many of the crew members are too specialized at only one thing, which is why they were unemployed to start with most likely. Repairing Final Drives and Joy Stick Loader Controllers isn’t really as ground breaking as Discovery would like you to believe. There are literally millions of pieces of machinery built with final drives in various different applications in the world. I’ve personally taken apart a final drive with a cresent wrench and a pair of channel locks. How insulting it is to watch Discovery over dramatize it.
As for Jimmy Dorsey, maybe he was bullied, maybe he wasn’t. Maybe you identify maybe you don’t. I identify with is ilk. Fired a many of them. When you aren’t the boss (regardless of whether your getting paid) there’s a time to talk and a time to be quiet. I’ve been on both sides and knew my place. I’ve also worked in enviroments of long hours, seven days a week, and the only thing that makes it tougher is a bitcher. The guy likes to bitch. I find it bizarre that people call Todd’s harsh statement to Jimmy’s son out of line. That child endangered the lives of the campers by leaving food out where there were bears around. The child needed to be scolded by everyone in the camp, given the danger he was putting them under. In such a community safety is paramount and if it takes a village for the child to understand this, so be it. I’d rather see the kid in tears over a reprimand, than see someone injured or killed buy a bear.

Todd is the laziest fat piece of shit I’ve ever seen. I have no clue why anyone followed the idiot up there to begin with. All that hard work and he has GAINED WEIGHT UP THERE!!!! That stupid beard must go also. His entire look with the teenage Bernie, brown/black/gray beard, what a dork. Nothing better then when he dragged everyone to South America and destroyed everyone’s bank account except his!!!! He still drives an $75000 truck, has a home, eating very well, the others are driving garbage trucks, dump trucks, and working back in the family garden center while he’s doing great. Amazing, but they think he’s king shit.
I am liking the show less as it goes along. The reason to watch every week was to see what Todd was going to screw up. It makes a person feel better about their own life. When you have guys like Freddy Dodge working with Todd, he doesn’t have as many chances to stumble as you would like.
