Bend Brewing Company won Gold at the World Beer Cup in the Juicy/Hazy IPA category for its “Because Science Hazy IPA.” The category had 274 entries, one of the largest in the competition which was held in Philadelphia April 22. BBC co-owner Packy Deenihan said in a news release, “The ‘Juicy or Hazy IPA’ category is one of the most competitive in the world right now, and to come out on top against such a deep field is a testament to the hard work and passion of our brewing team.”

BBC Head Brewer Sean Albrecht said, “In a field that competitive, you can’t rely on luck—it’s all about the science and the precision behind the pour.”

Other breweries also medaled. Monkless Belgian Ales won silver for “Pour Pour Pitiful Me” in the Belgian-Style Quadrupel category. UPP Liquids took home a pair of silvers for “Reduction Ratio” in the British-Style imperial stout category and “UPP Yours” in the Field beer category. Terranaut Beer won silver for “Karo Ya Maro” in the experimental beer category. Sunriver Brewing Company won silver for “Stomp” in the international pale ale category and bronze for “Cocoa Cow” in chocolate beer.

Boneyard Beer won bronze for its “Diablo Rojo” in the American-style amber/red ale category. Worthy Brewing won two bronze medals for “Famous Fanny” and “Before the Break” in the English-style pale and brown ale categories. Deschutes Brewery won bronze for “Kirkland Signature Helles Lager” in the Munich-style Helles category.
