When I heard that Rogue, out of Newport, had released a mash-up of its beer and the legendary bacon-topped maple bar from Portland’s Voodoo Doughnuts, I figured there was a good chance mankind had gone too far this time.

Still, when two iconic Oregon establishments are melded together with a never-been-done-before concept, you should not deny yourself.

Once home, with my bright pink 750ml bottle of beer, I grabbed a pint glass and popped the top. As I poured the smoky red ale into the glass, notes of sweet maple quickly wafted into my nose.

The maple scent dissipated into a haze once I dispatched the velvety smoked bacon ale to my taste buds. I expected my stomach to scold me for introducing it to such a bizarre beverage, but no. It was, in fact, absolutely delicious.

Admittedly, this ale is not for everyone. Even many diehard fans of eclectic beer won’t be as impressed with this bacon-y, maple-y mistress as I was. It’s a niche beer, crafted for the sub-set of the ale drinking population who crave adventure, oh and bacon maple bars.
