A mixture of Let it Bleed Rolling Stones, with the shatteringly low Tom Waits vocals and a tip of the hat to Johnny Cash’s lyrical drawl, LA’s The Abigails play a yearning, wondering style of blues. It’s a soundtrack for a long, sloppy slow dance hours after closing in a dusty roughneck saloon or as the band describes it, “A hootenanny in bummerville.” Sun., July 13. 8 pm. Remember those videos of Operation Cue where structures are blown to bits by atomic blasts and then the debris is sucked back into the bomb’s aftermath? Expect to feel like those feeble structures in the wake of Black Pussy. There’s not much that’s subtle about the ’70s-style classic rockers, least of all the band’s name (do not forget to include the word “band” when Googling). But there’s something to be said about being flamboyant, especially when you shred and have more amplifiers than God. Mothership opens. Thurs., July 10, 9 pm. Just reading the instrument list for Pueblo, Colo., band The Haunted Windchimes can be overwhelming—guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, kazoo, melodica, harmonica, fiddle, concertina, upright bass—and seeing the five pieces weave complex webs of all those components can be even more absorbing…in a good way. The band’s rootsy, dark and morbid minor key novellas are stories of turmoil and despair, but they’re not all downers. Don’t discount sweet, ukulele-led harmony-filled ditties. Tue., July 15. 8 pm.
