An individual found a box of abandoned puppies at Hollinshead Park, which was reported to Bend Police on Sunday, Oct. 6. The box contained eight puppies, who are now with the Companion Animal Medical Project, a nonprofit that provides free veterinary care to the unhoused population of Central Oregon.
The individual who found the puppies was walking near the east side of the park and reportedly heard whimpering coming from behind a trash can. The puppies were all very young, estimated between one and two weeks old, and appeared clean and well cared for, according to a press release.
After arriving on the scene, Bend Police contacted CAMP, which took the puppies to an emergency veterinary clinic. After being bottle fed and placed in incubators to keep warm, all of the puppies survived and will stay with CAMP until they are old enough to be adopted through The Peaches Project, the organization’s adoption program.
According to the press release, there are a variety of organizations in Bend and Central Oregon that offer assistance to those who may be struggling to care for their animals. Nonprofits like CAMP and Brightside Animal Center both offer pet food assistance.
