Afghani Civil Rights Leader Tonight at the Tower

Here’s the short list of reasons Sima Samar probably has interesting things to say tonight at the Tower about her native country, Afghanistan:

She was one of the first female doctors in the somewhat anti-female country of Afghanistan.
She’s been forced to flee countries for her safety.
She founded an organization to provide heath care to Afghani women and girls.
She served as Deputy President in the interim Afghani government after U.S. invasion.
She then became the Minister for Women’s affairs there.
She was forced to quit that job after receiving death threats.
She has been the target of additional public and private harassment by religious conservatives in Afghanistan.
She was the first Afghani nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2010.
She now heads the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.

Samar’s presentation, called The Question of Afghanistan is presented by the Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program of the COCC Foundation, which worked with the World Affairs Council of Oregon to bring her here and it’s really kind of a big deal that they were able to make it happen.
