The first Friday Mixtape of 2014 to explore new-ish music is this collection of sultry, beat-driven dance tunes with an 80’s new wave bent.

Launching with the eight minute long spacey track “Dumb Disco Ideas” from electronic outfit Holy Ghost!, this playlist trudges through the less flashy side of synth music. Despite dance-club quality tempos, there’s a restless unease in songs like “Whorehouse” by CEO and the atmospherically sad “Love is to Die” from Los Angeles group War Paint.

Even the cheery-titled band Happy Hands Club turn in a whimsical and yet unsettling track with “I Never Wanted to Get to Know You” which includes the line: “I really hope you die.”

In all, 15 tracks pair emotionally cold lyrics with warming up-tempo music.
