Deschutes County Health Services, St. Charles Health System and Bend-La Pine Schools are once again teaming up to provide people with a safe space to seek crisis stabilization and emotional support in the aftermath of the shootings at Silver Rail Elementary School. That event resulted in the death of a teacher, Megan Lambert, 25, and three students, including Rhoam Summer, 5, and an 8-year-old and 11-year-old whose names have not been released.

Drop-in, free support sessions will be offered Tuesday, Oct. 20 and Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 10am-3pm at the Central Library, 61956 SE Santorini St., in Bend.

The sessions are open to all community members. Trained crisis-response professionals and peers will employ Critical Incident Stress Management, or CISM, practices to lead small-group discussions, share guidance on talking with children about traumatic events and connect people with local resources. CISM helps people process the acute physical, mental and emotional reactions that naturally follow traumatic experiences.

Additionally, Deschutes County offers immediate walk-in mental-health support at the Stabilization Center, 63311 NE Jamison St., Bend. It’s open 24 hours a day for community members who require immediate help. There is also a local crisis line that people can call: 541-322-7500, Ext. 9, and a national hotline is available around the clock by calling or text 988.

There are several other resources available for Central Oregonians, including:

  • The City of Bend has created a resource hub that is regularly updated. It lists the various offerings and events available for community members.
  • The National Mass Violence Center has produced a Bend-specific resource guide for individuals and families.
