The Discovery West neighborhood will be one of the first to kick off this year’s fourth of July celebrations; drone style. Discovery West is a new neighborhood by the team behind the Northwest Crossing development.
The free event, “Stars and Stripes” will be celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday Friday, July 3. Its main star of the evening will be an animated drone show. At 9:45pm, 100 drones fixed with lights will take to the skies above the Discovery West neighborhood.
Drone light shows are becoming increasingly more popular in place of more traditional pyrotechnics but Valerie Yost, Director of Marketing for Discovery West told the Source they are still a rare sight in Central Oregon.
Drones utilize synchronized and computerized technology to choreograph fleets of aerial vehicles. By using LEDS, they project 3D images and move together to make animations in the sky. They are more eco-friendly, have no chemical pollutants and lack the fire hazard of fireworks. Plus, they’re pet friendly, as they produce no noise.
In October 2024, Discovery West hosted their first drone show.
“It was incredibly well received and residents immediately started asking when we’d do another one,” Yost said. “Celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary is a special occasion, and we wanted to create something memorable for our community.”
Community members will be able to see the drone show from afar, but Yost encourages people to come hear the music.
“The theme, “Celebration of the American Spirit”, is paired with a custom soundtrack that tells the story of the nation’s history and celebrates what makes America special.”
The event will also feature stacked offerings for fun Friday night out. Discovery West will bring in a DJ and entertainer, lawn games, giveaways and will be providing a variety of desserts and adult and kids beverages. Furthermore, ‘modern’ square dancing live lessons and demonstrations will be an exciting addition to the festivities.
Vendors such as Cuppa Yo, Stars & Stripes Bar, Adamo’s Carnival Eats and Sparrow Mercado Pie Stand will be in attendance. Balloons and Tattoos by Pretend and Hair Tinsel by Sparkle Strands will also be there to help community members sport the holiday in style.
This event will take place at Discovery Corner community plaza, located at 1125 NW Ochoa Drive in northwest Bend.
