The Source gained recognition in a Pacific Northwest journalism contest announced this week, winning third place in the Editorial & Commentary category among medium-sized newspapers in the region. To win the award in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Northwest Excellence in Journalism 2025 contest, the Source submitted Opinion stories tackling supportive housing, e-bikes and home hardening regulations, written by Editor in Chief Nicole Vulcan and Publisher Aaron Switzer.

In previous years, the Source has been placed in the “Small” size category in the annual SPJ contest, and the Source newsroom won the coveted General Excellence award among small newsrooms in the 2024 SPJ contest. This year, the Source was moved up to the “Medium” category, following the growth of the newsroom over the past year.
