The Deschutes County Sheriff’s office and the Tri-County Major Incident Team are investigating the death of a man reportedly hit by a police car in Redmond August 25.

According to the office of Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel, Redmond police responded to a report of a man pointing a gun at passing drivers around 12:50 pm near Redmond’s St. Charles Medical Center. Four officers arrived on scene, each with their own patrol car. One officer left his car and approached the man. As that was happening, another officer hit the suspect with his patrol car, according to the DA’s office. The man has been identified as Michael Gaskill.

Gaskill sustained serious injuries in the incident and was taken into Redmond St. Charles, but was later life flighted to St. Charles Hospital in Bend. He died on August 27th.

“In our system of justice, nothing is more serious than the taking of another person’s life,” said District Attorney Hummel. “I look forward to carefully reviewing the evidence in this case and ensuring that a just result occurs. Mr. Gaskill’s family, the officer who struck Mr. Gaskill with his car, and the public, deserve to know exactly what happened on this fateful day, and that’s what I’ll tell them.”

The investigation into the incident is expected to last about two weeks.
