The ski world got another boost this month.

Obama recently signed the Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act of 2011, which permits year-long recreation opportunities on U.S. Forest Service ski areas. The bill promises to boost local economies while continuing to uphold the environmental safeguards already in place. It amends a 1986 act that allowed only alpine and nordic skiing on the USFS lands.

Expected benefits of the bill include:

-600,000 more summertime visits

-up to 600 more full and part-time seasonal jobs

-$40 million in direct funding to local mountain communities

Here in Oregon, the bill should impact Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Hood’s Meadows, Cooper Spur, Ski Bowl, Summit Ski and Timberline, Ski Ashland, Anthony Lakes, Hoodoo, Willamette Pass and Spout Spring.
