A 17-year-old hiker from Bend survived a close call on South Sister Tuesday afternoon after falling into a crevasse on the Lewis and Clark Glacier.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Department the young man was hiking with a pair of juvenile companions and two adult chaperones when he strayed from the primary trail and slipped into a crevasse on the glacier. The group had just summited Sourth Sister and was on its way down when the youth slipped into crevasse and plummeted roughly 20 feet down. The young man was able to crawl out of the glacier before his companions alerted the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, which dispatched a search and rescue mission.

Ultimately the young hiker was treated for mild injuries after being escorted by sheriff’s responders and AirLink to an area near Moraine Lake.
