An Oregon fish and wildlife trooper got a little more than he planned for on Monday morning when he stopped on Highway 199 near Selma to help what he thought was a motorist having car trouble.

Instead, the trooper, Dan Stinnett, found two women in the car — one frantically trying to call 911 to tell them that the other woman was ready to deliver a baby.

Stinnett found the baby girl’s head already half way out and within three minutes had helped deliver the baby.

“When the baby took her first breath, I took my first breath too,” said Stinnett.

An ambulance soon arrived and took the new mother, a 32-year-old woman from Brookings who asked not to have her name released, and her baby to a hospital.

Talk about roadside assistance, eh?
