Note to Shelby Harwood: I hate to break it to ya, kid, but “Lynyrd Skynyrd” effectively died in a plane crash in 1977! No offense, but I suspect you hadn’t even arrived on the planet yet. I was a mere 16 when I saw them at the Long Beach Arena (in Long Beach, CA) earlier that year and I happened to have been walking down by the Deschutes river this evening. Unfortunately, I can assure you that the sounds coming out of the amphitheater tonight bore little resemblance to the group I heard back in the old days…

Ahh, the Old Days…when Clapton was still Cream or Blind Faith or Derek and the Dominos instead of just Eric Clapton…when the original Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dave Mason, Stepenwolf, Three Dog Night, The James Gang, Detroit (with Mitch Ryder) ruled the night… back when Buddy Holly was kicking Elvis’ ass…when Clyde McPhatter was the coolest black dude on the radio…
when Rock and Roll was seminal, inchoate but so fantastically effulgent….
White Room, anyone?
