Hey, I was wondering why all the news about what is happening outside of Bend when we, as individuals, have no control over what is happening 7,000 miles away? So many opinions about what is happening with the torturings and to what point? If anything talk about the issues closer to home like the problems here in Bend! Talk about them for a few seconds BUT do something about them and make a difference. I have met so many thousands of people who always whine about what is happening overseas instead of doing something here in town to make a difference. My question is this “can you make a difference with what is happening overseas? Most likely “NO.” However can you make a difference here in town? The odds are far greater to your favor here in Bend. There are scores of problems here in Bend that need serious attention and watching TV about Obama, the war in Iraq, the torturing issues, the silly media hype on anything overseas.
It is 2009 a time of serious change and 2012 is right around the corner so what happened to Karma? Are we not all going to give our attention to those who really need it here in Bend? Here is the old saying, “Build a great YOU and others will want to be like YOU!” So many people work 75% on themselves then think they can help others achieve greatness yet they are incomplete. There are thousands upon thousands of cities and towns across the USA that have this disease where a small percentage of the city thrives and the rest rots. Hmmm, there is a very telling message here-don’t you think?
Funny how so many people think that going to church once per week will remove their sins and yet they continue to sin throughout the week thinking “It’s all good!” I am astonished that so many people drive around in a dazed state not from drugs, medication or alcohol but from lack of long-term vision.
The opportunity for making this town a great place to live is there for the taking but we all know that without the support and drive from the residents it’s all moot. Someone should make a movie of this town and show the unsavory side of Bend to wake up those who feel this town is hunky dory!
Peace!
Big Boy

Those that thrive are thrivers. Those that rot…rot. Across the entire universe, you can’t remove the rot from the rotters by un-thriving the thrivers. Rotters and thrivers alike, get what they create, what they vote for.
Rest easy, Big Boy. Obama, the chimp in charge, will fix all the rot by raising taxes on all of us. Cap and trade alone, an Al Gore global warming tax, will cost the average dull witted drooling rotter $1600 more per year while making Gore a billionaire. Even soda pop will get a tax. Limiting executive pay ( a brilliant Obama plan) will drive the best brains among the remaining thrivers to other countries where they can thrive. The thrivers will thrive elsewhere. After the brain drain, the rot will remain to vote for Obama. You will be ecstatic, writhing in total mindless bliss, wallowing in your fetid Zombie rot, because this Fascist Marxism is change the brain dead can believe in.
You got exactly what you asked for. To say you never saw it coming is to publicly admit your own stupidity.
I don’t know what I find sadder and worse: Big Boy’s new age twaddle that never gets anyone anywhere, or dear Larry’s hateful, ad hominem attack that has little to do with BB’s letter and only uses it as a platform from which to spew his deranged rantings.
WTF can we do when all dialogue distills into what we have here: unrealistic world views, diametrically opposed, where the holders of those views cannot see any merit and benefit outside the positions they themselves have?
Is it the anonymity of the venue that allows us to launch into these diatribes? Are Larry and people like him (on all sides of the political and philosophical spectrum) this way when they confront an acquaintance who disagrees? Do we speak as strongly with such vitriol to anyone other than those we are sure agree, i.e. the Limbaughs and Olbermans of the world. Does the keyboard provide us a path to our darker angels that more human contact forces us to avoid?
I succumb at times to the same–why is that? Is it the ‘masked bandit’ syndrome: because we can get away with it?
Agreeing to disagree is becoming a lost art in this country…..on both sides.
Big boy: being concerned about our country’s position and involvement and overseas and caring about what happens in our own backyard are not mutually exclusive. We don’t need to police the world, but we can express our concern or dismay over our foreign policy and how we uphold, or fail to uphold the values that this country stands for. Our opinions do matter and do make a difference when we speak out against torture and genocide..or terrorism. Our representatives in govt. can only represent our views if we make them heard. Some of us actually do act on our beliefs and some of us even join the military to serve our country. And yes, many people in our community are directly involved in trying to solve our local problems. You can stick your head in the sand if you want and ignore the rest of the world, but myopia never solved anything and the world will soon leave you behind. Delbert: nice thinly veiled racist rant. good luck with that.
I am amazed that so many people revel in the politics around the world and what is happening in another country but then again we are Americans and we love to interfere! I have to say that focusing on what in in our heart, being here in Bend, is far more important than somewhere in Egypt. When this country is having troubles do the tribes in Australia have a pow wow and say “ooowee those Americans are having trouble let’s fast for a day just for them?” Uhhh don’t think so they just go along with their own issues. If they have a problem within their tribe they take care of it not worry about what is happening to another tribe 2,000 miles away. Point is this! We love to complicate things in our lives for our EGO’S love to be in the spotlight and it is pretty clear that Larry is one of the EGO hungry individuals. Sounds like Larry has some work to do on his own life. Not to jibe at Larry for I have met countless Larry’s before and 98% of them are all hot air.
Hey there I love this town and what goes on within her boarders so I say hurah to the Big Boy for believing in what is going on here in town. I agree that too many people are glued to the “idiot tube” and watching way too much garbage instead of getting out into the community. I hike, bike, paddle, swim, climb, fly, play tennis, soccer, frisbee golf and a host of other sports and did I say all winter sports too? This town rocks but it has some serious problems and they are way more important than any politics in Washington. I have heard of the “rants and raves” on Craigslist and most of them are garbage and I have met these people through my work and they need to move to another planet. Hey you people the sun is shining the weather is finally in the mid 70’s and time to get out into the fresh mountain air smell the flowers and love everything. Hurah to Big Boy! Dude peace out!
Boy are you uninformed Larry! Obama chimp in charge! Hardly that my uneducated friend for he does not run this country and chimp’s are pretty intellegent unlike your comments. However we are Americans who believe we are the finest human beings on the planet and are we “dead wrong”. I see what Big Boy was saying with paying attention to what is going on “in the here and now”. There is a huge population of fat Americans in this country who have become complacent with not only their health but their spending too so their focus seems to be elsewhere and not right in front of them. I am a personal trainer so my job is to inspire people how to get fit however it is very challenging keeping those clients when they are always looking at other people and not themselves, hint hint. A personal trainer is successful when she/he has reached a certain goal within themselves that radiates outwards and attracts those who wish to be like them. A successful trainer does not need to sell themself to attract clients for the clients will be drawn to them. How does this relate to Big Boy’s request for looking into ourselves and not at other people? It is very simple build a dynamic, healthy, fantastic self and everything else will fall into place but there has to be a 100% commitment not some half ass 50% either.
Obama has only been in office for what now 4 months and this poor man is being crucified? Larry I cannot believe you could even do 1/10th of what Obama is capable of. He is someone who is the unfortunate puppet to take all the abuse of the “complacent Americans”. Let him do his job and focus on being a proactive person not a negative person. Big Boy keep the articles coming. Peace.
Stunned, I actually agree with Mr. Cramer – Larry Delbert has clearly lost the plot but I disagree with Weekly Reader who says we should “agree to disagree” – I’m not from the US but one thing I have noticed since coming here is this: in public, there is far too much of “agreeing to disagree” and it has produced a generation or two of Americans who not only can’t debate but who wouldn’t recognize a real debate if it sat on them. Consider, as evidence of this, the hilarious performances of Bush in the 04 and 00 “Presidential Debates”. Until then I wouldn’t have believed that any nation would elect someone so proud to be a Village Idiot.
Richard–
Just because we disagreed on one thing doesn’t mean we will never agree on something.
Right back at you–stunned!
True, Steven – I apologise.
