It’s one of those six degrees of separation things.
Reading the obit of Augustus Owsley Stanley III, I immediately flashed back (bad pun) to the sixties, life in Berkeley, Owsley as the world’s leading manufacturer of LSD and some connection to him I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
Trying to come up the connection, I recalled that without Owsley there would not have been Tom Wolfe’s Electric Cool-Aid Acid Test, Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze,” The Grateful Dead’s “Alice D Millionaire” or the aptly named rock group-Blue Cheer. Owsley was, and remained to his death, a legend in hipster circles. He was also, during my Bay Area years, a wanted man.
Thinking about him as a fugitive, I remembered my connection. I knew a major “chemist” of the era not because of his acid production, but as the inventor of a machine that could blow down into jackets and sleeping bags.
Bent
Geekology: iPad part deux
The intended goal of our Portland-area trip this past Friday was to bring two local 12-year old fashionistas face-to-face with the wares at the recently opened outlet for Swedish retailer H & M. That location just happens to be in that most American of American places, The Washington Square Mall in that that oh-so-suburban community known as Beaverton. Just being in Beaverburg makes you think Bend is more than paradise, but that’s another story.
Onward we marched into the disco-pumping sounds that surround every purchase at H and M and other outlets like Aeropostale, Forever 21, Hollister, etc.
As we trolled from one brand location to the next, we kept passing pods of people sitting in camp chairs emblazoned with “Dick’s Sporting Goods” logos all arranged in cordoned off areas. To a person, everyone in each of the three pods we passed were on laptops, smart phones or iPads. Some were on two devices at once, all looked like fresh air wasn’t something they were used to and, to be honest, their average weight-per-stature seemed a bit high.
Video from Franchot Tone’s Performance at Velvet on Saturday Night
Nights like Saturday night in Bend always make me feel extremely fortunate to live here. Based on the quality and variety of live music alone, we live in a great music community.
Get Old Timey at Tonight’s (not so) Secret Speakeasy Party
OK, I’m not supposed to tell you about this (not true), but there’s a secret (it’s really not that secret) party going down in Bend tonight.
The Speakeasy, as the party is known, is hosted by Source columnist Columbine Quillen and her fellow party purveyor Erica Reilly and has a Prohibition-era theme to it.
“Stuck in the Middle of Bend”: A Song About the REAL Bend, Oregon
I’m not sure if you had this forwarded to your inbox already, (I’ve got it from a couple different people today) but this is a must listen for all Bend residents new and old.
The song, sung to the tune of Stealer’s Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You,” but the chorus is modified to “Stuck in the Middle of Bend” and the verses lament our high foreclosure rates, our expensive golf courses and all the other great reasons people supposedly moved here.
New Shows Announced: Devil Makes Three, Baseball Project, Rev. Horton Heat and more
This week I’ve been slammed with announcements of new shows heading into Bend in the weeks and months to come. And this is super cool.
Out of Town, Microcosmos, and the Lounge Lizard debut on Tsweekly.com
We’ll be the first ones to admit when we’re slacking. No Microcosmos online in Beer Town USA? That’s our bad and we’re going to start making up for it. And we’re not stopping with the most fun column to research (when else do you get to drink beer on the job?). Beginning this week all of The Source’s original content debuts on the web.
In addition to the long-running Microcosmos column, our newest rundown of Bend’s lounge scene hits the paper and the web in the Lounge Lizard. This week, the Lounge Lizard slithered its way down to The Marilyn Room at Kayo’s on Third Street. The lounge, which pays tribute to cultural icon Marilyn Monroe, received high marks in our ranking categories: ambiance, drink strength and Rat Pat Rating.
Benefit for Erin Zurflu Tonight at the Century Center
As is always the case, the Bend music community is rallying tonight to help one of their own.
Tonight’s Breathe EZ Concert at the Century Center is a benefit for Erin Zurflu, one half of the longtime local acoustic outfit, The Erins, who was recently diagnosed with a tumor in her lung.
Deschutes Brewery Continues Eastward Push: Now in South Dakota
Whenever I reconnect with a long-lost friend and tell him where I’m living, he’ll almost certainly respond by saying something along the lines of, “Oh Bend. Yeah, that’s where Deschutes Brewery is, right?”
Well, that phenomenon isn’t going to die out anytime soon, especially with Deschutes announcing today that their push into the Midwest has now expanded sales of Mirror Pond and Black Butte Porter into South Dakota.
Watch our video for a peek inside the Bend Table Tennis Club
Here at The Source we know how to use our words.
Every once in awhile we try to use more than just words by bringing a visual component to our stories using video. Last week we brought you video of Bend’s youth billiards league and this week we peek inside the Bend Table Tennis Club at the Boys & Girls Club.
