Remembering Carol Bryant: A local theater legend passes on

Carol Bryant passes away at 85.

When Carol Bryant passed away this week at 85, a chapter in local theater history came to a close. Bryant’s life revolved around local theater from acting to directing, to promoting and shepherding the Community Theater of the Cascades (now Cascade Theatrical Company) from it’s inception staging shows in the Kenwood School gym to its present day Greenwood Playhouse theater.
My first encounter with Bryant was in 1980 when she helping cast a show. I got the lead male part due, in part, to her persuasiveness with the show’s director. Years later, I acted under her direction and thoroughly enjoyed the experience as she turned the cast from bumbling to presentable.

Poetry Slam Tonight at Poethouse Art

The Bend Poetry Slam takes place at Poethouse Art in Bend, Oregon tonight.

If you’ve never been to a poetry slam at the Poethouse, tonight may be the perfect opportunity. The Bend Poetry Slam is the product of former slams at Townsend’s Tea House and Silver Moon Brewery, combining together into one super powered, all ages slam.
Don’t know what a poetry slam is? Competitors participate in three rounds, presenting poems in less than three minutes. Audience members vote for the best slam poetry piece and at the end of the night a winner emerges. Both competitors and audience members win though, as they get to hear some creative, original pieces by local poets.

How to Walk Outside Today

This morning, I walked outside of my house and noticed that, due to Snowpocalypse 3: The Reckoning, my steps and driveway had turned into an outdoor ice skating rink. Now, this would be awesome if I was Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, and had two bumbling burglars trying to rob my parent’s empty house. But I was just trying to get to work and I don’t have health insurance.
This got me thinking about shoe choices. Below are some of my suggestions for what to wear when boots just don’t cut it:
