First it was Bend Snowpocalypse last Tuesday (hit the link for my story about how we got the paper out that day), then we were treated to the sequel on Saturday, Bend Snowpocalypse 2: The Revenge.
This week, it looks like we’re in for Bend Snowpocalypse 3: The Reckoning.

Walgreens wants YOU to drink cheap beer
As a formerly disgruntled Walgreens cashier (read: ex-employee, still disgruntled) I witnessed curious marketing choices made by the faceless corporation first-hand. I remember the individually wrapped pickles near the register, the countless automatons and the brief appearance of Venus fly traps.
So was I surprised to see something at Walgreens resembling beer recently with a sign boasting two 6-packs for $5?
Actually, yes. I’m one to spot beer branding from a mile away. I can spy the girl with a big hat sitting on the moon, a blue ribbon or an ubiquitous mountain range without blinking an eye. So when I saw these new cans, very cleverly designed ones with a waterwheel, I was as perplexed as I was curious. Big Flats 1901: It’s the water that makes it. Was this a trick? A sick joke? Was it non-alcoholic? It looked like other cheap beers, but where did it come from?
Making Music: The classical music is alive and well in Central Oregon
Despite the continued portrayal of Bend and Central Oregon as a mini epicenter for indie, folk, rock, metal, hip-hop and pop music, thanks to the excellent musicianship of the Central Oregon Symphony under the able direction of maestro Michael Gesme, classical music remains alive and well in our community.
Playing to packed houses at Bend Senior High School this past weekend, the symphony proved once again that it can perform at a high level as it continues to offer great orchestral music as well as serve as a springboard for young solo talents. In the case of the three weekend concerts, 17-year-old flautist Nick Loeffler and 12-year-old violinist Kiarra Saito-Beckman.
Both young artists played flawlessly and with poise well beyond their years. Loeffler’s skill, particularly during the cadenza of Mozart’s “Concerto for Flute in D Major” was astounding.
Lyrics Born Video from WinterFest
WinterFest sure was wintery, huh? Not only was the weekend a winter wonderland, due to plenty of snowfall, but the festival itself proved to be an excellent time for locals and visitors alike. Mike Bookey shot tons of video this weekend, which I plan on editing together into a mini-documentary this week.
Punk Rock Monday with the Vampirates
Whether you have the day off today or are slogging along like we are over here as we recover from a long and fun WinterFest weekend, there is some fun to be had tonight — just in case you’re the sort of person who really likes to get the most out of your three-day weekends.
The fun I’m talking about can be found down at the Mad Happy Lounge where Reno’s Vampirates are their hardcore punk rock.
Friday’s WinterFest Schedule
WinterFest is underway tonight at 5 p.m.
Video From Last Night’s WinterFringe: Larry and His Flask and Mosley Wotta
A few hundred of us got an early jump on WinterFest at last night’s WinterFringe event, which began downtown before teleporting to the Century Center.
Downtown, there were brief sets from Mosley Wotta, who delivered a solo spoken-word set, and Larry and His Flask, who did a totally un-amplified run through of half a dozen or so songs.
Plowing Snow: My continued battle to keep the snow off my sidewalk
Call me naïve, but I get out when it snows and judiciously clean the sidewalks bordering my house. I’ve done so for over thirty years and always thought that if I didn’t clean them I might get tagged because there’s a city ordinance on the books that sidewalks have to be cleaned within 24 hours of a snowfall.
Funny how ordinance guilt works on me, but as far as I know, not for a good many people as the ordinance has never (by my recollection), ever been enforced.
So I clean the sidewalks and accept thanks from those who walk to work, to the grocery store or with their children to school.
Get Pumped for Bend WinterFest with Video from Last Year’s Festival
One of Central Oregon’s biggest outdoors festivals, Bend WinterFest, kicks off tonight with a new addition to the snowy weekend – Winter Fringe, but Mike will have more about that for you later today. This year’s festival is bigger than ever and includes something for everyone.
Snow Report: Skiing at Virginia Meissner after the storm
I don’t think I’ve made the drive up the Cascade Lakes Highway in more than a month now. That might be an exaggeration, but I like to ski three times a week and this has been a serious hiatus.
