Hillstomp Wraps Up Weekend Run Tonight

The two friendly dudes of Hillstomp — the dynamic two-piece junkyard blues duo out of Portland — played a raucous show last night at the Silver Moon and they’ll return to the venue tonight for the second installment of their two-night run.
If you haven’t heard the direction this fiery is heading on their new record, Darker The Night, I would advise getting down to the Moon tonight to see these guys live.

Celebrate Bob Marley’s Birthday Tonight

Celebrate Bob Marley’s birthday tonight in Bend.

OK, his birthday is actually on Sunday, but given that there’s some sort of football game on that day, it’s better for reggae fans to celebrate tonight (Friday), which they can do up in the Midtown Annex.
The show features a slew of reggae bands playing your favorite Marley tunes and features a lineup including Sashamon, Chronicle, Alcyon Massive and Escort Service Band.

More Mud: COTA weighs in on a mushy subject

Where to ride your mountain bike in the winter.

Last weekend a lot of Bend mountain bike riders heeded the call of the Bent blog and headed to Peterson Ridge where they were greeted with some incredible mud-free riding. Except for a few short, and not that muddy, spots the trails were firm and fast.
The recent spate of muddy trails has yet again raised the question of when and when not to ride a trail that’s muddy and what riders can all do to make sure trails don’t get damaged too badly.
COTA trail maintenance and construction mavan Chris Kratsch weights in the subject below.
“The first thought most people have is ‘Mud in Central Oregon.’ While it true we live in a desert and for most of the year our trails are bone dry and if we do receive rain in the summertime it only improves trail conditions.  However, in the winter and spring that situation is different, as our soils become saturated and frozen. Along comes a warm front or the spring thaw and we’re all psyched to head out to ride our bikes or go for a run. The trouble is as the top layers of trail start to thaw out it becomes muddy as there is nowhere for the water to go but to the surface. While other parts of our state laugh at what we call mud, the fact is the same issues arise on both sides of the Cascades. For some trails mud riding is acceptable for others it is not because of their sensitivity to lasting damage.

Contemplating Blue Valentine: A Non-Traditional Movie Review

We think about the strong side-effects of viewing Blue Valentine.

Last weekend I busted out of Bend and went to visit some of my girlfriends from college in Los Angeles. Of course, I left town the weekend two of the movies I’ve been anticipating most opened, Blue Valentine and 127 Hours (which Mike reviewed this week), meaning I wouldn’t be able to review either one for the print edition. Luckily enough, I saw Blue Valentine while I was out of town and decided to throw up a non-traditional movie review.
Blue Valentine stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling as a Cindy and Dean, a couple whose relationship has deteriorated over the course of their marriage. The film cuts back and forth from the present to the beginning of the relationship. In the present, Cindy works as a nurse and Dean paints houses. The couple has a five-year-old daughter, whom they droped off with Cindy’s father for the night so they can go away to a theme-room motel for some alone time.
