Pennies for Peace Benefit Concert

Adding to the festivities surrounding Greg Mortenson's appearance here in Bend is this late-announced fundraising show that follows the event at Bend High. The lineup brings to the stage two familiar local acts in Blackstrap and The Mostest, playing bluegrass and jam rock, respectively. All you need to get into the show is a $5 minimum donation to benefit the Pennies for Peace project, which helps build schools in Pakistan. All ages. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Their covers of mostly early Cash numbers (including all the classics, of course) are eerily on target – down to the twang of the guitar and the smoothly deep vocals that made Cash an American legend. John Cruz

This Grammy-winning Hawaiian guitarist and songwriter descends on the Silver Moon for a rare Oregon appearance. Cruz is a legend on the islands, but also has a strong following on the mainland that includes folks like Eddie Vedder and Trey Anastasio, the latter of whom he collaborated with to create Trey's solo cut “A Case of Ice and Snow.” $10/adv at bendticket.com, $12/door. 8pm. This massively huge hip-hop celebration brings five members of the storied California indie rap collective Living Legends and will likely bring out many a healthy chunk of Bend's relatively sizeable hip-hop contingent. And yes, the members of the Legends will be performing together. Also on the bill is Oregon rapper Marv Ellis (known for his multiple performances at the Bendistillery Martini Bar), who will be playing with a full band. You can find some local talent at the show as well with UNON, the collaborative effort between Cloaked Characters and Mosley Wotta. All ages. 8pm. It's a match made in distortion pedal heaven when these two local rock bands join forces to fuzz up your brain at the newly revamped Mountain's Edge. You just don't hear enough pirate bands these days, do ya? In fact, anywhere outside of the Caribbean (by which we mean the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland) you don't hear pirate tunes at all. Well, Reno's Deadly Gallows are a self-professed band of pirates (or “pirate band”) who will make you want to wear an eye patch. Local acoustic punks Larry and His Flask open the show. $5. 8:30pm. We got a book called Tomato Rhapsody: A Fable of Love, Lust, and Forbidden Fruit in the mail a few months ago and that wasn't unique in and of itself because we get a lot of books in the mail. But what did catch our often-wandering attention was the attached bio for author Adam Schell. He'd played some linebacker at Northwestern, taught yoga in Hollywood and now spent time writing a book set in the Tuscan countryside. Now he's moved to Bend and has dropped by the Source offices. We've learned that he's a terribly nice guy with plenty of stories to tell, so go hear a story when he reads from Tomato Rhapsody and signs the book. 7:30pm Wednesday, Dec 23.
