Go figure, haven’t opened your rag in quite some time due to its dissapointing (SIC) content, but seeing as it was either The Source or People magazine, I opted for the former.
Wow! What a surprise! Right there in front of my eyes, a whole OUTDOORS section dedicated to some self-congratulating “writer” touting her experiences with spin class. Outdoors section…Spin class?
Now I’m sorry to hear about this shoulder issue, but really, a staff writer let alone your “editor ” could not come up with anything but a wasted page on spinning? Doesn’t she have any HARDCORE friends out there that have summited some formidable peak, only to later wrestle some wayward pronghorn and sleep inside its gutted carcass, Outdoors?!
Hell, raking leaves or covering her pipes to prevent freezing, something even remotely related to the Outdoors. Better bring ol’ Woody back and his 80’s Vuarnets – now that was some writing.
Peter Balestrieri
Editor’s Note: We never considered dismissing our Outdoors columnist Pam Stevenson after she was HIT BY A CAR. While she has dedicated a couple of columns to recovery oriented themes, such as spin classes, she’s continued to cover a breadth of outdoor subjects, including hiking, cross country skiing and mountain biking. We hadn’t thought to add wild sheep skinning to her subjects, but we’ll take that under consideration.
This article appears in Dec 18-24, 2008.

Actually I thought the spin column was particularly well timed since it came between the end of our unseasonably long and warm fall and any decent snow accumulations up in the mountains. Some important preparation for outdoor epics is often done indoors and that’s enough connection for me.
Keep up the good work Pam.
Thats a super bumdeal that Pam was hit by a car, no doubt. However, what a lame excuse for an equally as lame article. This is BEND OREGON. Any writer of an ‘outdoor’ column should at least have enough experience to recall past outdoor adventures before writing some E! news spinning fluff. If Woody was hit by a car (cyclegods forbid!), he’d still have a badass tale to tell.
Oh Source, this is as bad as The Bulletin reporting the piddly “boulders” at Columbia Park as a place to get your rock climb on. Way to cater to the Californians.
Balestrieri seems to think that Outdoors Column is the sole domain of the “Hardcore” and the rest of us aren’t worth the print. Had he bothered to read Stevenson’s past articles, he would have seen there is no lack of hardcore experiences. Further, Pam includes includes some outdoor and indoor adventures that I can actually relate to, one of which is Fred’s spin class. Spinning prepares us for the outdoor challenges. I can connect the dots; I wonder why PB can’t?
Stevenson is a good writer with many interests and I look forward to her “spin” on the outdoors each Thursday.
Hey Peter, you don’t have to read the article if title isn’t catering to your idea of “interesting.” You are obviously into reading the free paper over buying People so why don’t you head on down to the public library and you can read your outdoor magazines, people, and any other niche mags, all free and then you can spend your day finding something to bitch about in all of them. Keeps you off the streets.
Some folks may have enjoyed the Spinning article, WTF made you God of Print?
