Election Endorsements: Deschutes County

DeBone for Deschutes County Seat #1
At a recent candidate forum Tony DeBone didn't sound like much of a politician, fumbling to explain why as a citizen he was going to vote in favor of raising taxes for a new jail while running on a campaign of (read my lips) “no new taxes,” but we're not going to hold that against him. And we think that voters shouldn't either. We like DeBone's fresh and sometimes unpolished approach that can come off sounding – dare we say it – like honesty. And while his delivery could use some work, DeBone represents a chance to bring a new perspective to the county commission.

The OLCC's Mystery Man

For critics of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, Jason Evers – well, we suppose we should call him “John Doe” now – is the gift that keeps on giving.

For critics of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, Jason Evers – well, we suppose we should call him “John Doe” now – is the gift that keeps on giving.
Evers/Doe is the former Bend regional manager of the OLCC who was exiled to Nyssa, a tiny town near the Idaho border, after behaving like a tinpot dictator toward bar and restaurant proprietors here. His career then continued its downward trajectory. At this writing, he's sitting in a jail cell in Idaho.
It appears that TMWCHJE (The Man Who Called Himself Jason Evers) adopted the identity of a 3-year-old Ohio boy who was murdered 28 years ago. The fraud came to light when the U.S. State Department checked statements he made on a passport application against Ohio state records.

Oil Goes Boom: BP's big 'oops', stupid terrorists, a papal bailout and more!

The author has been sent on the road to discover a lost country formerly known as America.

The author has been sent on the road to discover a lost country formerly known as America. He is reporting from a quaint place called “Canada.” Seriously, there's another country up north full of good beer and money called “Looney's” (I'm not making this up) with millions of people coexisting rather amicably, on assignment for Or-Bust.com and The Source Weekly.
You Can't Go Home Again
The most poorly planned terrorism plot since that Nigerian's underwear was hatched in Times Square this weekend, with naturalized American citizen Faisal Shahzad arrested late Monday at JFK trying to flee to his home country of Pakistan. The inbred Pakistani Taliban are taking responsibility for the plot but no one knows why. With non-explosive fertilizer, ten gallons of gas, propane tanks and a few firecrackers in an old Nissan Pathfinder, Faisal forgot that Times Square is full of cameras and NYC doesn't care much for terrorists. As inept as a southern governor (see “Crist Comes Out”), Faisal makes Goldman Sachs look innocent.

Arizona's Guns are Crossing the Border

The propagandists for Arizona's draconian anti-immigration law claim that illegals are terrorizing Arizona residents. Actually, the crime rate for illegals is lower than for the native born, but reality has never swayed a right-winger who wants to believe BS. Arizonans have a head-in-the-sand viewpoint when it comes to their virtually non-existent gun laws. Thousands of weapons of various kinds have been flowing into Mexico from Arizona for years.

It's Called Teamwork

During these trying and often polarizing times, it is especially noteworthy when an entire community unites for a cause. With the recent headlines related to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) and their former Bend regional manager, I find it appropriate to thank those people who led the effort to achieve positive change with the OLCC on behalf of our community. This was an extraordinary accomplishment that had an immediate impact on the lives of our citizens and the economy of our city.
Change of this magnitude could have only been accomplished with the bipartisan and unified commitment that our citizens, community leaders, and elected officials exemplified during this process – an extremely challenging and time-consuming endeavor that culminated with the governor supporting our community's cry for help.

Reborn A Liberal

Being a conservative, I am ashamed by the findings of W. Lamberson, April 29, that found people of my ilk are responsible for food, water and medicine shortages on the planet.

Being a conservative, I am ashamed by the findings of W. Lamberson, April 29, that found people of my ilk are responsible for food, water and medicine shortages on the planet. Then, worst of all, responsible for depleting the ozone layer, causing global warming and deforestation. What chumps!
Being a conservative, it was required of me to be the most openly bigoted, racist, sexist, earth plundering gay basher I could be.
I'm finally ready to change my ways. I want to become a liberal.

Choke On This

The G String Stranglers are not a radio band, and never will be.

The G String Stranglers are not a radio band, and never will be. We will never win a Last Band Standing corporate competition. That said, we had a blast doing that show. We did what we came to do, and that was kick the crap out of Boondocks, and Bend. We wanted to show people who we are. And thank you very much for the award. The Rise of Decline: When things are bad, should we be praying for worse?

When Andrew Joseph Stack, a software consultant with a history of tax troubles and marital problems, crashed his Piper Cherokee into the Austin, Texas, office of the Internal Revenue Service in February, the crime was widely seen as a referendum on the national psyche. Stack, who killed himself and one other person while injuring 13, was said to represent a strain of legitimate grievances in America.
In his syndicated column, Richard Parker credited Stack with summing up the American “continuum of disappointment, anxiety, fear and yes, anger” related to economic pressure and income inequality. “On the day of Stack's violence,” Parker wrote, “everyone I interview who has read his suicide note has the same reaction: No, he should not have tried to kill anyone to make his point and so he deserved to die. And yes, the guy did have a point.” Writing on AlterNet, Rich Benjamin called Stack “an acute symptom of this nation's neglected wounds,” concluding, “We dismiss his screed, suicide and crime as 'lunatic' at our own risk.”

Slicing and Dicing: Red Steel 2 takes a stab at a kung fu crossover.

Silhouetted in cowboy boots and a broad-brimmed hat, with a katana flaring out alongside his duster, the hero on the cover of Red Steel 2 looks like he's ready to kill whatever life is left in the fusion of Western and Eastern imagery – the same mix of cultural clichés that the movie Sukiyaki Western Django did too well and anime like Afro Samurai have done too much.
But there's something elegant about the way that Red Steel 2 presents its cultural mashup. Cacti grow alongside bamboo. Tumbleweeds roll past torii. The breathy tones of a shakuhachi weave among the jangles of a guitar on the soundtrack. The juxtaposition of the two cultures isn't the starting point of the game – it's merely the backdrop to a form of combat that merges the two distinct styles of control made possible by the Wii Remote: shooting and swording.

Disasters, Death, and You

How many times has this happened to you: You're strolling along in the park, gazing lovingly at the beauty and wonderment of nature, when… WHAMMO! A meteor that's roughly the size of Texas and made out of rusty razor blades and used condoms smashes into the center of town! Everything's ablaze! Buildings are toppling! The highways are destroyed! People are screaming and running in a blind panic! Twitter is down! A drippy used condom is on the shoulder of your new sweater! And everything is really, really, really
uncomfortable! WHAT… DO… YOU… DO??
